The DY-100 class began as a secret project by Yoyodyne Space Systems, at the behest of one of her major stockholders, Khan Noonien Singh, who through his control over most of the Asiatic Alliance was able to launch a number into space and using launch facilities in Khazakhstan and some skilled computer hacking, he was able to launch them into space and subsequently store them at Space Dock Shangri-La, which was the newest of the Asiatic Alliance's three docks from whence they operated most of the ships seven ships which supplied their two colonies on the moon.

Khan Noonien Singh would later use these hidden DY-100 ships to escape in the aftermath of the Eugenics Wars and his overthrow. The launch of them was supressed and the DY-100 would then be sold by Yoyodyne to all of the major powers in the space race, resulting in it's widespread useage in supporting the now vastly expanding array of Lunar, Lunar orbit and other installations. From 2001 the DY-100 would be a common sight traversing the spacelanes between Earth and the Moon and, after the development of the 3rd Generation Ion Drive, first used on the Ares probes would be instrumental in exploring Mars.
