Typournis III was first discovered in 2379, as one of the closest hospitable Class M planets to the Romulan Neutral Zone. While Starfleet's interest in the planet wavered, groups of civilians from across the Federation saw Typournis III as an opportunity to escape their hectic lives. In 2384, the planet was successfully colonised.

Environment

Typournis III is fairly typical of most M-Class planets. From space, the planet bears a striking resemblance to Earth, only with far less ocean and smaller ice-caps. A purple tinge in the atmosphere is caused by magnetically charged ions, sufficiently dense enough to block most forms of communication and weapons fire.

Biosphere

Unlike Earth, Typournis III supports a very limited biosphere. While flora and fauna are fairly diverse and widespread across the surface, Typournis' animal life is only one-tenth as diverse as Earth.

Government

Until 2384, Typournis III had been uninhabited save for a few primitive life-forms. With the expansion of Federation colonies in the surrounding regions during the early 2380s, it was only a matter of time before Typournis would become home to an array of Federation citizens. Typournis' only colony is located on the Northen Hemisphere, close to the equator. Approxiamately 33,000 citizens lead by Governor Tylus Vorin. Since then, the colony has prospered peacefully, attracting little attention and rarely receiving any starship traffic, save for a few transport craft. In 2385, a small outpost was assembled orbiting the planet. Built as a remote research lab, the station has served only as an outpost for some of the colony's more dangerous experiments. In recent months, quarrels over the colony's isolation from the Federation has been an issue of deep concern to the Governor. While Starfleet has relinquished it's hold on the colony, it is feared that a schism may form, and lives may be lost.

Defences

Typournis III is protected by a thick atmospheric layer of electro-magnetic energy. This energy creates a magnetic shield, playing havoc with sensors, communications and weaker shields. Only certain comm-signals can penetrate the field. The colonist population has, in recent years, constructed a small defence unit of approximately 30 minute vessels. However, the ship's functions are practically useless as orbital defence units, as once one of the vessels reaches the outer atmosphere, it cannot return the planet below without sustaining heavy damage, as the colonists only designed their shields to output minimal strength.

Satellites

Typournis III is orbited by a single, Class L moon, Nimea. Nimea completes a single orbital rotation of her parent planet every 29 hours, and is tidally locked with Typournis. Nimea also orbits dangerously close to the Roche Limit, her orbit declining by three metric metres every year. It is predicted that Nimea will collide with the planet's upper ionosphere in just under 700 years.
