Wingman

The term wingman refers to the junior pilot of a two-starfighter element. When flying in formation the wingman flies slightly to the left and rear of the element leader.

The philosophy of a two man element is that, by working in tandem, the two craft increases their firepower and environmental awareness while allowing mutual defense and a wider range of tactics. An element team spends more time in linked simulators practising joint manoeuvres than they do in solo training. This philosophy of mutual support extends beyond the simulator and cockpit.
