Third planet of the Veridian System, Veridian III is a Class M world that is unoccupied by any intellectual species. Like similar worlds, the planet boasts large bodies of water, mountain ranges, and vast tropical forests along its equator.

The planet was discovered by a Klingon survey ship in 2298. Soon after, several small science stations were established to find resources that might be useful for the Empire. Unfortunately, continued hostilities with the Romulans forced the abandonment of the planet in 2303. This area of space eventually became territory of the Federation.

Then in 2371, Dr. Tolian Soran used one of the abandoned facilities in a region of arid mountains as a site to launch his trilithium weapon into the Veridian star. He had hoped to collapse the star as he had the Armagosa one, in an attempt to redirect the Nexus to his location. Wise of his plans, the crew of the USS Enterprise-D intercepted him at Veridian III. The Enterprise was seriously damaged in its battle with the Duras Sisters, and had to separate the ship to save the crew. The Saucer section ultimately crash-landed on the planet, while Captains Picard and Kirk succeeded in stopping Soran. Sadly, James T. Kirk---who had been assumed killed by the Nexus in 2293---was fatally wounded in the fight. He is still buried on the planet. (Star Trek Generations)

Plans to conduct a more in-depth study of the planet were puton hold due to the Dominion War.
