This stretch of space lies in the [[Beta Quadrant]] and is home to pirates, renegades, and assorted villians who simply do not want to be found. The area is littered with asteroid fields, small planetoids, and gaseous anomalies that are ideal to hide among. It is also home to the dying red supergaint star S-4K7, whose errant EM pulses play havoc with ship sensors. (&#039;&#039;Enterprise&#039;&#039;: &quot;Borderlands&quot;)<br /> <br /> Since the 22nd Century, both [[Federation]] and [[Klingon]] authorities have attempted at various times to police the Borderlands. While such efforts have curtailed criminal activities, they have by no means eliminated them. Civilian ships have long learned to avoid the area whenever possible, and [[Starfleet]] normally will escort transports and cargo vessels that have to pass through.
