The D-15, or K'vort class Cruiser is a classic example of Klingon design theory. Rather than develop a new starship to fill in for the role of the ageing D-7, or Kahless class the Empire's engineers merely rebuilt the classic Bird of Prey design on a massive scale. The design termed the D-15 is a truly vast version of the BoP. Carrying a heavy array of disrupters and torpedoes the D-15 also featured something new for the Klingon Empire, a phaser array. The Klingons had elected to introduce this new weapon onto the starship because of the higher rate of fire. The combination of the two would prove to create a very effective combat vessel.
Despite the fact that the BoP was a versatile design which had been upscaled before, the process of upscaling the K'vort was less than successful, the end result starship was somewhat more vulnerable than originally intended, although the problems with the design did not become apparent until the Klingon-Cardassian War, when a number of K'vort class vessels were effectively disabled by torpedo salvoes being fired at the K'vort's wings, the concentrated fire resulted in overloading the shield grid and then ripping the side out of the ship, normally taking most of the ships main power offline. This was caused by the fact that the size of the new wing movement mechanisms and their proximity to the engines and weapons made for a significant weak point in the design.
This flaw resulted in the cancelling the production runs of the K'vort class that were scheduled, which has lead to the Empire electing to allow the current K'vorts to be used until they either are too old or destroyed in action. In addition to this, some of the hulks of damaged K'vorts have been either sold or salvaged by other powers, leading them to become a design, heavily modified that is in use with a lot of minor and developing powers, since it is much easier to refit the damaged hulls than it is to build your own. Some other K'vorts have been retrofitted to be utilised as troop carriers. The end result of this design flaw is that whilst the K'vort is still a common sight, with over 300 still in service with the Empire they are rapidly diminishing in numbers.
