Sotark

The Sotark are a Beta Quadrant race found in Sector 223-Beta. They are a space-faring species with warp technology equivalent to 22nd century Earth. Their Home Planet is Sotark II. Their government is a theocracy and their current leader is Mo Suree, 155th J'Nair.
Physiology
The Sotark are a humanoid race with features similar to humans. They have large eyes, long hands with opposable thumbs. Their heart is in the center of their chest and they possess a third lung. Their skin, hair and eye color varies from person to person.
History and Culture
Not much is known about the history of the Sotark people prior to first contact on Stardate 30422.7. Through some general inquiry their world was riddled with constant war and conflict until the "Fire Age" (the era in which the Sotark faith was brought into it's current prominence nearly a millennium ago). The first J'nair was named and peace has existed since.
The Sotark have a monotheistic faith and much of their culture is rooted in their faith. Like the Bajorans, who seek to honor the Prophets; the Sotark believe that their lives are a temple to J'Sai. The faith is world wide, however there are various factions within the central belief.
Scientific study is secondary to the Sotark which is why the development of their warp technology is slower compared to other species in the Beta Quadrant. They believe that Science and Technology is used only when necessary. They do not possess transporter technology and will not allow any visiting race to use it while in orbit of their planets and colonies.
Government and Diplomatic Status
The official government of the Sotark is the Sotark Union and consists of several colonies. They have a colony on one of their moons (Molas) and one in an adjoining star system named J'Siar. Currently they have trade agreements with the United Federation of Planets, the Klingon Empire, the Ferengi Alliance and the Tholian Assembly. Their chief exports are food stuffs, precious metals and dilithium.
The government recently has had troubles with terrorism on their home world. The Molas colonists have been attacking Sotark II in retaliation. They have been denied independence from the Union. The diplomatic team aboard the U.S.S. Apollo (NCC-76204) is currently mediating talks between the government and the terrorists to end the bloodshed.
