Starship Helm Operations is a sub-department of Flight Control and, subsequentially, the Aerospace Corps. Personnel in these positions are called flight control officers but have traditonally been known as helmsman. The helmsman is responsible for the flight operations of a starship, including warp, impulse, thruster control as well as astro-navigation. Helm is also responsible for controlling the starship during launch and landing sequences, docking procedures and re-attachment manoeuvres in the case of Galaxy and Prometheus class starships.

Starship Helm Operations officers wear a red Starfleet uniform. They report to the Chief Flight Control Officer who, in turn, reports to the Executive Officer.

All starship helm operators are trained as shuttle pilots to form the basis of their training toward being a starship helm operator. On smaller starships, starship helm operator duties include Flight Control Operations.
