The Chaplain is a specialized position tasked with providing spiritual guidance to the crew of their assigned ship or facility. Though specialized in their own faith, chaplains are also versed in the religious customs of many other species, allowing them to serve all the divergent customs that make up the Federation.

The current form of military chaplain dates from the era of Earth's First World War. A chaplain conducts religious services in the field and tries to maintain morale.

Chaplains are nominated in different ways. A Starfleet chaplain can be an Academy-trained officer with additional theological training or a priest nominated to the fleet by religious authorities. It is uncommon (but not unheard of) for a chaplain to become a full member of the clergy in his faith, then enroll in Starfleet Academy later.

Chaplains are nominally noncombatants under the Khitomer Accords and Setlick Convention. Still, many of them have died in the field. Many have been decorated for bravery in action. Some Chaplains also break the Khitomer Accords and act as combatants, usually only if and when the situation warrants itself.
