Tal Shiar

The Tal Shiar are the secret police and elite intelligence arm of the Romulan Star Empire. They are ruthless in their policies. They keep the people in a constant state of fear. The Tal Shiar acts under the authority of the highest levels of government, unanswerable even to the Romulan Senate. The Tal Shiar maintains their own fleet. Their operatives outrank all but the most senior members of the military. Many disappearances have been attributed to the Tal Shiar. The Tal Shiar were nearly destroyed in 2371 while acting in concert with the Obsidian Order to destroy the Founders homeworld. Unlike their Cardassian counterparts, they were able to rebuild from the debacle.
