Nova class
The Nova class is a type of Federation starship in service in the late 24th century. It is designed primarily as a science and scout vessel, used for long-term research and analysis after a region has been surveyed by larger explorer-type vessels.
One unique feature of the Nova is its Waverider shuttle, which is located in a special docking port on the dorsal side of the primary hull, similar to that of the Aerowing on the Intrepid class.
As science vessels, Nova class ships have the ability to land on planetary surfaces with four landing struts in the secondary hull. To further accommodate ease of research, Nova class ships are designed to enter planetary atmospheres for long periods of time.
History
The design that would eventually become the Nova-class began---strangely enough---as the pathfinder model for a vessel meant to help counter the growing Borg threat of the 2360s. Orginally, the ship was to be a fast attack torpedo platform with as many as six torpedo launchers. When the Advanced Starship Design Bureau decided to radically redesign the vessel in response to changing Borg tactics (in favor of what became the Defiant class), the original prototype was temporarily shelved at the Antares Fleet Yards. However, it was soon discovered that experimental vessel NXP-2365WP/T had many merits and Starfleet concluded that the new Nova-class would be the long-awaited successor to the venerable Oberth class survey ships.
The namesake of the class was launched in 2368 and offically commissioned in 2370.
