Summary
A Yeoman is usually a personal assistant to a command level officer. File work, and sensitive message transport are but two examples of the Yeoman's possible duties. The Yeoman assists their CO in day-to-day duties that the person they are assisting would otherwise not have the time to do.

*At the most basic (crewman) level a Yeoman may need only a good command of the prevailing office language and the ability to type, and may spend a large part of his or her time filing and fetching papers (or the equivalent regarding electronic files and database information) or answering telephones.

*A more skilled (Petty Officer) Yeoman may be required to type at high speeds using technical or foreign languages, organize diaries, itineraries and meetings and carry out administrative duties which may include accountancy. An executive Yeoman may also control access to the officer they have been assigned to, thus becoming an influential and trusted aide.

*The largest difference between a generalized Yeoman and skilled executive Yeoman is that the latter is required to be able to interact extensively with the general public and any other person or group that the officer they are assisting is responsible to interact with. As the level that the officer interacts with increases so does the level of skill required in the Yeoman that works with the officer. Those Yeoman that work with high command level officer must be capable of emulating the style, philosophy, and persona of the officer for which they work. These highly skilled Yeoman position are usually held by Chief Petty Officers.
