The warp core is the standard Starfleet mode of propulsion that allows the exploration of vast amounts of space. A common misconception is that a starship travels faster than the speed of light. This is not the case as the warp core provides the power and plasma to the warp coils that create subspace distortions, allowing a starship to partially enter the fabric of subspace and propel itself at non-relativistic speeds. The better the warp field, the greater a distance is traveled in subspace until a starship reaches Warp 10, at which point it has no distance to travel to be anywhere.
