Alfa 177

Located roughly ten light years from Nausicaa, Alfa 177 lies in the Coolidge 23 system of the Beta Quadrant. It is a solitary planet, being the sole entity to orbit its star. Temperatures there dip to minus 120F, yet life does exist there. Its animals have evolved to live underground, where both heat and unfrozen water exists. Its most famous resident is the Alfa 177 canine.

In 2266, the USS Enterprise visited the planet. They not only recovered a sample of the canine but also inadvertently discovered alfabertium, a rare yellow metallic ore than can scramble a Transporter's buffer matrix. This usually results in extensive damage to the system, but it can also split a signal and create duplication. (The Original Series:"The Enemy Within")
