A 2300s descendant of the Klingon Bird of Prey, the B'rel is visually identical to its predecessor but possessed of greater size, armaments and crew numbers. Like the early Bird of Prey, the B'rel quickly became a workhorse for the Klingon Defense Force and was produced in great quantities over several decades.
First designed and constructed during a cold war period between the Klingon Empire and the Federation, its cloaking device, manoeuvrability and sizable armaments made it a prime raider on and behind enemy lines. Since the signing of the Khitomer Accords and the alliance with the Federation, the B'rel has served with distinction as a patrol craft and standard tactical vessel in any number of conflicts, including the Empire's war with the Cardassian Union and the Dominion War.
Like all Klingon warships - and several of that race's non-combat ships - the B'rel is heavily armed. While many of its components have become dated in recent years, a retrofitting project initiated during the opening months of the Dominion War has increased the class' all round capabilities, including offensively. For example, not only were its disrupter cannon modified to increase their destructiveness by no less than 5%, the recharge periods between medium to full power shots were reduced noticeably. Similarly, the torpedo, shield and other tactical systems of all B'rel class scouts, such as their short-range sensors, have been upgraded to 2366 standards, the most recent refit project completion date.
Despite all of these improvements, however, the design has been shown to be deficient when compared to the latest Federation, Romulan, Cardassian, Dominion, Gorn and Tholian ships of the line of similar size and functions coming to the fore. Granted, no design can be expected to compete with craft several decades younger than it, but the Klingon Empire's reliance on the B'rel has placed a burden on the class under which it may eventually crack.
