The Chief Science Officer, or Chief Scientist, is the most senior officer and department head of any starship or facility's science department. While many of the junior officers and other crewmembers in the science department fall under the distinction of being a specialist in one particular field, the Chief Science Officer is a interdisciplinary generalist, being well versed in a wide range of subjects but not necessarily a master of any more than one or two specific fields. The Chief Science Officer is a member of a starship or facility's senior staff, reports directly to the Commanding Officer of said starship or facility, and is usually required to have many years of extensive experience before being promoted to this position.
