Osiris Rim

The Osiris Rim is a collection of colorful gaseous anomalies that stretches for several light years in a kind of ribbon-like shape. For many years, the Rim marked part of the boundary between Federation and the Talarian Republic in the Galen Sector. The gravitational pull of several nearby stars, however, causes the gases to ebb and flow...sometime up to hundreds of kilometers a year. This fact has caused more than one border dispute between the two powers before a grid of stationary navigational beacons was established between 2351 and 2353.

The same push-and-pull effect from the stars also creates the occassional electromagnetic storm, some that have been quite fierce. Commercial craft usually avoid the area, but some daring captains will trade the potential dangers for valuable time by transversing the Rim.

Despite it's out-of-the-way locale (the closest planets are all Talarian worlds), the Rim remains a popular attraction for civilian recreational cruises.
