| Personal History | Mari Solvbakken was born in Oslo Norway in 2362. She was an only child. Her mother was a member of the Federation diplomatic corps and her father was a university professor at the University of Oslo. She did not see her mother with any regularity and she spent her summers with her father’s brother on the family farm near the coast in the Ostfold region of Norway. Roughhousing with her three cousins prepared her well for combat training when she joined the Starfleet Marine Corps in 2380. She wanted to be a soldier. In 2381 she completed basic training and advanced combat school. Due to her upbringing around diplomats, she spent her first years of service in the protective detail of Federation embassies, first on Bajor, later on Cardassia Prime. She spent more time dress uniform than she cared to. In 2384 she was moved to a rapid response unit that was charged with helping the Cardassian response to rogue elements within the remnants of the Cardassian military. She was involved in several operations to move civilians from outposts that had come under attack. After several successful operations, her luck ran out when her unit came under attack. She was severely injured by the explosion of a plasma grenade. She was evacuated to a hospital in a federation colony. Both of her legs were lost in the explosion. The nerve damage was extensive and limited her options for new legs. She was evacuated to a nearby hospital ship and was fitted with cybernetic prosthetics developed by one of the engineers on the ship. By early 2385 she was back on earth and in intensive rehabilitation. Her prosthetics, while not so esthetically pleasing, offered her more functionality than many of the models available from Starfleet medical. During rehabilitation she applied for the Academy and by late 2386 she started classes. Her options were somewhat limited by her physical condition, she pursued diplomacy as a specialization. It was never her dream to follow her mother into the diplomatic service, but it was the best option for her to remain in Starfleet. She graduated in 2390, was commissioned as a Lieutenant JG, credited with time served in the enlisted ranks, and served as the diplomatic attaché in the Federation embassy on Ferenginar. Immediately before her departure, she was approched by Starfleet Intelligence about doing "double duty" at the embassy. Her side task would be the management of human intelligence assets in the various Ferengi crime families. It was a growing problem, the crime families, and Mari was in a unique place to help. The low status of women in Ferengi society made this posting a real challenge, but also a unique cover. She did form unique relationships with some of the wives of powerful figures on the Ferengi homeworld. She held this posting until 2393. In 2393 Mari was promoted to a full Lieutenant and was assigned as diplomatic attache to the CO at DS 9. Her knowledge of the local landscape proved highly valuable, but it was also painful to be constantly reminded of the accident that changed her life. By 2395 Mari put in for a transfer to some other part of the galaxy. |
