Starfleet Info

Physical Appearance

Height 6'3"
Weight 177lbs
Build Athletic
Hair Color Dark Blond
Eye Color Blue
Physical Description Tall and athletic for a human, Rafe will always jokingly say he chose the wrong specialism considering he has to occasionally squeeze into tight spaces. He is fair skinned, with the freckles and moles expected from someone with his complexion. His hair, which is dark blond, has a tendency to curl, especially under damp conditions. He usually has facial hair, a light beard, and he will maintain it is because the warp core gets upset if he shows up looking like a teenager. His eyes are blue, with a hint of green in them. He smiles easily, either to disarm or just with humour. He has a scar on the side of his left forearm, after getting it sliced up on an engine blade, which his mother stitched up since there wasn’t a dermal regenerator around.

Family

Mother Margaret Hunnicutt (biological mother, former miner, now teacher)
Other Family Mother: Doctor Inara Hunnicutt, Surgeon

Personality & Traits

General Overview Rafe is somewhat of a joker, using humour and sarcasm as weapons against, mostly, circumstances around him. A busted-up warp core is often met with a bit of a joke and comment, followed by him pouring himself into getting it up and running. A lot of people see it as Rafe not taking his job, or Starfleet, serious, which may explain his low rank at an age where most of his Academy year have made Lieutenant Commander. Truth is, Rafe is happiest when he is working in Engineering, and is of the opinion the higher you rise, the less you do for a living. He’d rather work, and have a good time, than get promoted. There’s not much that appears to get to him, as Rafe is more than happy to bury it and let it build until he is about to snap. He is loyal to his friends but won’t cover up if someone is at risk at having their incompetence ruin the warp core.
Strengths & Weaknesses Rafe is an outside the box thinker, good at improvising repairs when needed. He never seemed phased by issues thrown at him, able to keep a calm head in a crisis, although that is countered by his lack of obvious professionalism.

He tends to bottle things up, mulling things over, until the point where he suddenly has a temper flare up out of nowhere. He is working on recognising the signs and finding a counsellor or chaplain when that happens.

He has an appreciation for alcohol, not synthahol, although in his words he’d never throw either out of his bunk. He has been known to have a still, the legend of the explosion of one during his Academy years still somewhat muttered about by instructors every now and then. This is not exactly what you’d expect for someone within Starfleet, and he is unapologetic about it during physicals.
Ambitions Rafe’s true ambition is working and continue to work. He likes being able to help the people that they encounter and hasn’t thought much beyond that.
Hobbies & Interests Rafe is a boxer, so spends a lot of time practicing. He also enjoys running, and has been known to run around ships. He enjoys a good book though, and has been known to quote poetry at times. He enjoys tinkering with various things, and every new posting he sets the challenge of making an alcohol distillery using only what he can scrounge up on the ship. He also knows how to knit, and does it to maintain dexterity of his fingers...and because he enjoys it.
Likes / Dislikes Rafe’s partial to making his own home brew, which he calls gin and most people call an explosive. He likes practical jokes, horsing around and a light attitude on things. He dislikes Admirals, rigid by the book officers, hard beds and Klingon food. He also doesn't like holodecks, because he knows it isn't real.
Languages Spoken Federation Standard, Cardassian (rusty), Bajoran (even rustier)

Character History / Other

Personal History Born on Volan III to Margaret Hunnicutt and her wife, Doctor Inara Hunnicutt, Rafe spent the first few years of his life crawling around in a colony with a lot of different people trying to make a good life for themselves. He was taught from an early age to make do and mend. You broke something, you found a way to fix it. So understandably, he learned quickly to fix what he broke, be it a vase or a replicator. Any political issues around him was never talked about in front of Rafe, and he spent his early childhood in blissful ignorance about what was happening in the universe.

So when Volan III suddenly found itself in Cardassian territory, it came as a shock for young Rafe. He was evacuated with Margaret, while Inara decided to stay. As a doctor, she wanted to be one of the last people who left. Unfortunately, not everyone left Volan III.

When the Dominion Wars broke out, Rafe was living in Scotland, on Earth. Watching the news, desperate to hear anything about his Mama. He was a teenager by that time though, and his mother was so worried that he found himself hiding behind jokes and easy laughter. He’d do pranks, anything, to make his mother laugh. When the war finished, Inara returned, a different woman than he had known. But Rafe kept up with the easy jokes and smiles, hiding his own worries behind an easy smile.

Rafe had a decent brain about him, and he had kept up his interests in tinkering with broken things. As he was a teenager, it became a fascination with all things engineering. He’d spend hours studying specs, layouts, theories, anything he could find. He realised pretty early on he had two choices…he could try his hand with a civilian company or join Starfleet.

In 2376, Rafe took the Starfleet Academy Entrance Exam. While he scored high on some, he was just under the acceptance level. Devastated at first, he decided to spend his year doing something useful. He left Scotland and Earth, going to Mars where he spent time maintaining shuttles, getting some hands-on experience and using the feedback he had gotten to improve the things he had failed on.

He retook the exam in 2377 and became a cadet at Starfleet Academy. During the next four years, Rafe found himself in for a bit of a shock. A lot of those around him were very serious, and Rafe wasn’t exactly the most serious person. During his third year, he built a still to produce alcohol. Once added with blue colouring, he dubbed it ‘jet fuel’, after an ancient method of powering engines. In his fourth year, it exploded, and he got a citation for dangerous behaviour but wasn’t expelled, mostly because his phaser proficient teacher was one of the people who enjoyed a glass of jet fuel.

He graduated in 2381, not at the top of his glass but a comfortable middling bit, and his first posting, the USS Nathan Hale, reflected that. A Curry-class cruiser with a crew compliment of 290, it was the perfect mixture of things falling apart, and people falling apart. For a brand-new Ensign, it was still an experience of learning to navigate the sometimes-stiff Starfleet world.

He stayed on the USS Nathan Hale for five years, not really that noticed, but a steady worker who got on well with everyone. In 2386 he was transferred to the USS Fleischer, a Merced-class vessel, known as slow and cramped. The boredom of being on the ship was only heightened by the slow and steady warp core, the sort that never had an issue, but never excelled. It often led to the Engineering team playing cards if the senior officers weren’t around, and Rafe found himself a decent poker player. This all changed in 2392, when an asteroid field caused the warp core to fail and left them stranded. By pure luck, they found there was an abandoned Lancelot class ship, all escape pods gone. The USS Glasgow had been considered lost, all hands dead, and finding the ship had been somewhat surprising. Rafe was part of the away team that got the ship running again, and they managed to get a distress call out and were rescued just outside the asteroid field.

In 2392, with the USS Fleischer being retired, Rafe finally got to step foot on a more interesting ship. The USS Kitsune was a Yeager class vessel, small and somewhat considered a relic of the Dominion Wars. But the interest was the way she was created, with bits and pieces from other ships. It made the ship highly customisable, and with many quirks. For a man like Rafe, it was a lot of fun, and with the frequent warp core issues, there was never a dull moment. Even if Rafe would, at times, say that they needed to change from Sol time to something else because there weren’t enough hours in the day to get the engine sorted out.

In 2395, he was transferred to the USS Wolff, in Engineering.
