Personality & Traits

General Overview Jack’s a flyboy at heart and with it comes a certain level of chasing adrenaline. His calm drawl can sometimes make people believe he is far more relaxed and measured than he actually is; rather it is the structure of Starfleet and the regulations that hold his temper at bay. He has a cocky streak in him on the quiet, usually appearing whenever he is spending time with his friends, although experience has given him a measure of humility to balance it out. He has a protective streak in him which has aided him well as a First Officer but it is always balanced with the idea that they all signed up for something bigger than one individual.
Strengths & Weaknesses Weaknesses: Jack can be impulsive in his words and is willing to take risks if that means the mission will be successful, even if it might not be the wisest choice.

Strengths: He is a principled man believing in what Starfleet and the Federation stands for, and willing to give everything for it.
Ambitions Jack wants to go all the way to Captain his own ship.
Hobbies & Interests Jack still flies whenever he can, since it is still the greatest love of his life. He is also a decent fighter, although more from Starfleet training than any real aptitude. His thrill seeking side also means he enjoys the holodeck where he is able to (safely) engage in sports that would not be safe for a human to do.

Character History / Other

Personal History Jack was born in Detroit, Michigan, a city on the North American continent. His father, Morris Slattery, was an author who wrote fiction, many for commercial holodeck programs. His mother, Lovisa, died when Jack was two and he never had any real memories of her. What he grew up knowing was that she was a painter, using the old medium of canvas and paint and who died when walking outside in a thunderstorm. Still, Jack’s childhood was one of childhood innocence and lack of worries. He went to school, had friends and would usually be the first to declare that the group were going on adventures. His father, busy with his work and struggling with being a single parent, would cherish the quiet in the house when Jack was out.

Jack was a daredevil of a child, from climbing buildings to sneaking into restricted areas. There was never any true malice or mischief involved in it except wanting to see what was behind a locked gate. The stunt that he would as an adult recall with fondness was when he snuck into a shuttle because he had never been in one, and when the pilot returned had to hide. It got him a free ride to San Francisco, where the shuttle landed to drop off Admiral Cobb. As the Admiral got up, Jack sneezed, revealing his position and the 6’5” Admiral was less than pleased to find a stowaway. However, faced with an eleven year old, he instructed his pilot to contact his family and get him home.

Jack spent the entire trip back asking questions about the shuttle and flying, until he was dropped off at home. From that moment on he knew he wanted to be a pilot. And Admiral Cobb hadn’t really been that scary anyway. His father explained that getting into Starfleet Academy wasn’t easy, that there were a lot of people trying to get a place. In other words, Jack had to step up. He did, although it happened with studying in the summer and flying lessons when he turned 16.

Jack applied for Starfleet Academy when he was 18 and did the exams. He scored well enough to be admitted and started his flight training. He was going to be a pilot, no matter what. He applied himself, although he struggled in some areas such as the sciences, he did better in other areas. When he graduated, he wasn’t top of his class, but middling but overall solid. That in itself was well enough considering he had joined Starfleet just before the Dominion War started, and graduated after it had finished.

He was a brand-new minted Ensign, with his new uniform, shiny combadge and eagerness to prove himself in some adventure. He went under the command of Captain Hideki Umezaki, who was a very by the book Captain who prided himself in being able to take over any position on the bridge when needed. He became somewhat of a mentor for the excited Ensign, taking time to make sure he was on the bridge with him. He encouraged Jack to train across the different duty stations on the bridge, so he at least understood it all. Jack spent 5 years under the tutelage of Captain Umezaki, before he was translated to the USS Antares.

The next years saw Jack take what Captain Umezaki had taught him and applying it. When the USS Antares got stranded without the warp core, communication down when they were patrolling the edges of Federation space, he understood why his former Captain had held so close to the regulations and what Starfleet stood for. There was a breakdown in the chain of command and a mutiny and Jack found himself having to hold onto his own beliefs, even if it made it dangerous for him. The entire ordeal was resolved when a small group managed to get enough power for one subspace transmission, getting help. Jack had been locked up with the others loyal to the Captain and therefore, after investigation, was found not to have participated in the mutiny.

After the USS Antares, Jack became Chief Helm Officer, a role that saw him spend less time on the bridge. He would always make sure he had some shifts there, but mostly he was in his office, or training his department. In the end, he realised that the only way back on the bridge that he missed was to go a different path: Command. And it became his new focus, to get on the bridge in a position where he was truly part of things again.

He became the Second Officer and Chief Helm Officer on the USS Nathan Hale, where he served until he was transferred to the USS Ticonderoga as the First Officer. It was his first time as a First Officer and served under Captain Pernille Kinne for 3 years, before she retired. The new Captain wanted his old Second Officer as First Officer, and as such Jack asked for a transfer rather than fighting what was inevitable. He understood the new Captain wanting someone they knew and trusted and when he was offered the First Officer spot on the USS Wolff, he took it.
