Personality & Traits

General Overview Although James can be an intense man when under pressure or focussed, he has an easy-going sense of humour and enjoys unwinding with a drink and good company as much as the next man. He has a natural intellect and is able to learn quickly...although if he doesn’t have an interest in something, he has trouble making it stick. Despite his complex history with the marines, he still misses service at times, even if he still struggles with his more traumatic combat experiences. He knows it could have been a lot worse though and considers himself lucky to be able to pursue a second career in Starfleet.
Strengths & Weaknesses Strengths: Cool under pressure, determined, surgical specialist, skilled in combat, sciences, excellent sportsman, high stamina, intelligent/quick learner

Weaknesses: Stubborn, flashes of temper, virtually no engineering skill, limited knowledge of ship operations, high expectations of himself, has trouble switching off / sleeping
Hobbies & Interests Rowing, Rugby, Cricket, Swimming, Projectile Weapons, Sparring, History

Character History / Other

Personal History His mother an instructor and father a Starfleet Marine, James was brought up around the ethos of service from a young age. He loved seeing his father in uniform and studying his medals. Yet whenever the bright boy said he wanted to be a marine too, his father would tell him flat out that he didn’t want him to be.

Still, James proved to be a vibrant and energetic youth - even if it sometimes resulted in flashes of hot temper - and he performed well in both academic studies and physical pursuits. He showed particular aptitude in sciences and was a member of the rugby, cricket, rowing and swimming team by the time he reached the end of his school years.

His parents were keen for him to apply to a traditional university, but he was determined to follow in his father’s footsteps. His father continued to insist that he didn’t, resulting in several heated arguments between the pair that ultimately drove a wedge between them.

Going against his father’s will, James applied for the Starfleet Marines. He was accepted, but was unexpectedly transferred to officer training when his test scores showed a proficiency in the sciences and a high aptitude. It wasn’t what he expected, but he went with it, happy to serve where it was felt he could be of most use.

Any glamourised ideas of life on the lines was soon drummed out of James during training. Despite struggling with keeping his fiery temper in check under the pressure of high discipline and overbearing trainers, he somehow managed to keep his mouth shut. Mostly.

His inclination for science, thinking fast under pressure and gritty determination saw him trained as a field surgeon. Being sent out on the front was truly a crucible of fire. It was one thing training to treat injuries quite literally under fire, but it was another doing it for real…with real blood flowing and real lives on the line.

James grit his teeth through six years of service, caught up in his fair share of traumatic missions. It gave him a new perspective on his father’s stance, finally understanding that he wasn’t trying to hold him back, but rather he had been trying to protect him from the experience. Still, his stubbornness and embarrassment won and he couldn’t bring himself to approach his father after the bitter way they’d left things.

James’ luck ran out on a particularly fraught mission that saw the field surgeon turn patient. Caught in an explosion, he sustained heavy injuries that required a number of surgeries and a replacement biosynthetic right leg. Even after months of therapy and recovery it was clear he was never going to be the same young man he had been and he was given a medical discharge out of the marines.

James had no idea where to go or what to do, but when he walked out of the compound, bag slung over his shoulder, his father was there to pick him up and insisted on taking him home. The two reconciled their differences over the following weeks, able to understand each other far better than they ever had before, and by the time James was ready to leave a few months later, their relationship had been repaired.

In a better head space, James decided to focus on his medical skills and joined the regular fleet on a fast track course to become a medical officer, specialising as a surgeon.

A stint on the Ganymede and Halo helped bed him into the new career. It felt strange at first, but he slowly got used to the change of pace. By the time he was transferred to the Wolff, he’d found his stride as a surgeon.
