Mission:
The Silent Scream
Location: Sickbay
Eve was keeping busy a PADD in one hand checking off medical supplies, she was meticulously noting any items that needed replenishing from the medical supplies in the cargo bay. It was important to ensure that both sickbay and the cargo bay were fully stocked, so inventory was a top priority.
So far, Eve had managed to tidy every cupboard and storage area making sure each was labelled with what was inside for quick retrieval of items. Call it a character flaw or OCD, but she liked things in order. She was just about to move to the next cupboard when the sickbay doors swished open.
Lieutenant JG Darzen Kail, the action acting Chief of Engineer, stepped into sickbay, his hands out in front of them. They were burned, both of them. Coils were hot and sometimes hands ended places that hands shouldn’t go when working with engines. He looked around quickly. “Nurse?” he asked, seeing Eve at the cupboards in the back.
Eve turned and took one look before rushing over to Kali. “Goodness me! What on Earth have you been up to, Lieutenant?” She quickly picked up a nearby hypospray and held it up for him to see. “Something for the pain.” She pressed it to his neck before motioning to the neatest biobed. “Sit right over here and I’ll sort that for you in no time.”
Darzen sat on the bed and nodded to anything she told him, his jaw clenched tightly until she administered the hypospray. He took a deep breath and let it out slowly. “Thank you. I was in a hurry, of course, and wasn’t thinking.”
Eve smiled. “Well, I’m not going to give you a telling off about it. I’m just going to advise being more careful next time.” She picked up a tricorder and ran a scan of his hands. “Partial thickness burns, you’re lucky this wasn’t any worse or you’d be looking at surgery instead of dermal regeneration.”
Darzen was already feeling better, due to the painkillers. “Just... feel stupid. I’m a good Engineer. It was a stupid mistake... a rookie mistake.” Because he was feeling better he had just noticed that the nurse had spots, like he did. “Are... are you Trill?”
“Hold nice and still, I’ll have this done in no time.” Picking up a dermal regenerator she gently worked her way over his injuries one finger at a time before moving onto his palm. One hand done she moved on to the next.
“Maybe?” he asked, looking at her spots intently and holding still for her. “I don’t know a lot of species that are spotted quite like Trills...”
“I’m sorry... I tend to zone out when I’m concentrating on fixing wounds.” Eve smiled. “Yes, I’m half Trill and half Human.” She looked over his skin checking it. “You’re a joined Trill aren’t you? What’s it like? Being joined?”
Darzen snorted softly. “It’s... a lot of things all at once... I... I don’t really know to describe it. It’s sort of like someone handing their picture album of people you’ve never seen, but at the same time you know all their names. That’s not a very good way to explain either.” He shrugs. “I’m still me... I don’t heard voices in my head or anything like that... it’s just... knowing.”
Eve nodded. “I don’t think I’ll ever get to be joined, they tell me that my being a half Trill would be problematic to say the least.” She offered a smile. “I’d like to learn more about it though, maybe we could talk about it again sometime I’m curious.”
“I’d be more than happy to tell you my experience. I can’t say that every joining is the same. There aren’t a lot of us in Starfleet. Like only two others that I know of. One is also not joined.”
“I’d love to hear your story, and to learn about your symbiont too.” Eve smiled warmly before putting down her medical equipment. “There, all done. How does it feel? Bear in mind that the pain killers are currently still working, it’ll be tender for a while when they wear off.”
“I can tell you about my story... and several others, but that’s all there is to the symbiont. I can say that things have been different for me as far as what I like to drink or eat and sometimes when my body wants to do those things. Things that didn’t annoy before now do and the opposite as well. Not all of it... but some.” He looked at his hands and flexed them carefully. “It seems fine now, Nurse. When can I go?”
“You’re good to go whenever you like.” Eve smiled warmly. “It may feel tender for a while, just come back if you have any concerns.”
“I would like to talk to you about Trill again,” Darzen replied. “Which shift are you on? I’m almost always on beta... sometimes that runs into other shifts...” He stood carefully, but didn’t feel any sort of negative effects of any of his ordeal. “Thank you again...”
“At the moment I’m scheduled for Beta or Gamma when needed, but I’m around most of the time. I don’t have much of a personal life being on my own so I tend to roll in when I don’t have anything to do.” Eve grinned. “I’d like to spend more time talking with you so drop by and see me anytime.”
Darzen cocked one eyebrow and furrowed his brow. “Just drop in here? This isn’t a very welcoming environment. I like to stay out of this place. I don’t really think Engineering is a great place either for deep conversation. Do you have anything else that you go? I mean... I’m sure you eat.” He smiles a little. “Don’t you?”
“Of course,” Eve smiled warmly. “I was hoping you’d take it as a hint to drop by my quarters, or ask me out to dinner.” She gave him a mischievous smile.
Darzen paused, surprised, then blushed, his cheeks flushing. “Oh... well then. Since you do eat... we should get together. Maybe... uh tomorrow night?” he finally managed.
Eve nodded and smiled. “I’d like that, very much. How’s about 1900 hours?”
Darzen grinned. Something had happened to him today and he wasn’t sure what it was, he didn’t feel different. Two dates? In two days... after... he pushed it out of his mind. “Uh... yes! 1900 hours... your quarters.” He headed toward the door, then turned around again. “Casual? Or...?”
“Completely casual” Eve grinned. “I don’t expect you to turn up in a suit or anything.”
Darzen chuckled and nodded. “Excellent! Then 1900 hours, Nurse Kees.” He turned and left Sickbay, heading for the crew mess hall.
Watching him go Eve smiled to herself as she got back to work.
