A little tummy trouble

Posted on Wed Sep 7th, 2022 @ 5:29pm by Captain Taliserra Tigran & Lieutenant Hope Ross, MD

Mission: The devil wears tripolymer
Location: Deck 6- Sick bay
Timeline: 20th June 2395

The sound of a crying child preceded Taliserra's arrival through the doors of sickbay, she carried her daughter Lashell over her shoulder who had spent most of the last hour crying and no matter what Taliserra had done wouldn't stop and she couldn't figure out why.

Doctor Ross had only been working the alpha shift as the Wolfs Chief Medical Officer and so far she hadn't had a whole lot to do. As her mind drifted from her report to the thought that she had already been aboard the ship for a month and hadn't really made any friends was strange. Hope's concentration was broken when she heard the cries of a child. The Doctor quickly made her way into the main area of sickbay "There there" she smiled "what's wrong little one." Doctor Ross asked her southern accent soft.

"I'm not quite sure," Taliserra replied. "She started crying about an hour ago and has barely stopped."

"Well what's your name sugar?" Hope had a way with people and hopefully she could get this young one to calm down so she could find out what was wrong with her patient.

"Go on, tell the nice doctor your name." Taliserra said encouraging her daughter.

"La....shell." Lashell eventually said through bouts of crying.

With a warm smile on her face. "Well Lashell my name is Hope and we are gonna get you to feeling better okay sweetie." Ross was shaking her head as she spoke softly to the child.

Lashell buried her face in Taliserra's shoulder for a few seconds before she turned to look back at Hope. "uh-huh"

"Can we go over here to this bio-bed and take a look?" Hope asked and for the first time looking up to see who was carrying the child. "Captain" she said with a smile "if you would" she gestured toward the first bio-bed in a row of several.

Carrying Lashell over to the biobed Taliserra placed her down with a slight groan, she was getting heavier by the week.

"What's her main complaint?" Doctor Ross asked the Captain and then looked down at Lashell "what's bothering our sweet girl?"

Lashell put her hand to her stomach.

"It seems to be her stomach area, she hasn't vomited but she has come pretty close a few times." Taliserra replied.

"Is she eating and drinking like normal?" Hope asked and reached for a tricorder. Abdominal pain could mean a number of things, but some scans would show what it was.

"We had lunch maybe an hour before she started crying, she ate pretty much everything on her plate." Taliserra said, nodding slightly.

Hope listened as she started her scans and started a soft physical exam "that hurt baby?" she asked, pressing on her tummy.

Lashells hand quickly went to Hope's with a mild cry of discomfort.

"I see" the scans were coming in. "Have we been trying new foods?" the Doctor asked, looking up at the Captain.

"A few," Taliserra replied. "She's taken to most solid foods I've tried with her, she really likes fish."

"Fishy." Lashell quickly said.

"I think that's our problem" Hope was looking over her scans “I believe our sweet girl here is having an allergic reaction to something she ate" the Doctor said looking up at the Captain. "I can give her a hypo to treat the symptoms, but we will have to figure out what she's eating that she's allergic to. I'm going to assume it's fish."

"I hope not, this isn't the first time she's had a good variety of fish before and she has really liked it." Taliserra paused for a moment as she tried to remember what else Lashell had had that day.

Hope was preparing a hypo to subside the symptoms the young girl was having "okay Lashell" she smiled "I'm going to give you some medicine to help okay?" she asked the girl and looked up at the Captain with a smile on her face to get permission to inject the meds. "Perhaps she had a new type of fruit or nut?" Hope asked while waiting for the go ahead.

Taliserra nodded slightly, giving Hope permission to hypo Lashell. "I gave her some peanut butter on small bits of toast for the first time today?" She proffered.

"Ahh" Hope said and pressed the hypo-spray to the child's arm. "I think we have found our problem, momma" she looked up at her superior. "No more peanut butter I'm afraid."

"She's allergic to nuts?" Taliserra asked. "There's no real history of allergies in my family."

"There often isn't" Hope continued to watch her scans "and allergies sometimes change, she may grow out of it" looking up from the tricorder in her hand "but for now I'd keep this girl away from any type of nut."

"I just hope it's not another 'gift' from her human father." Taliserra said, it had been some time since she had thought about whoever Lashells father was and it wasn't a pleasant memory to bring up.

Lashells crying slowly stopped as the medicine worked its way through her small body.

Hope got a feeling that the Captain wasn't exactly fond of the girls father and she offered a soft smile "I think she is going to be just fine" she paused "and it is probably a gift from her human half, but we will continue to monitor her as she grows" the doctor paused and gave the young girl a pat on the shoulder "routine check ups and I'll work on some things to help eliminate her allergies all together."

"Thank you, Hope." Taliserra said, she returned the smile somewhat half-heartedly. "I will certainly be glad if it's the only surprise her human side has in store for us."

"I agree, Captain" Hope said "but we will keep a close eye on this sweet girl."

Looking up at her mother Lashell held her arms up wiggling her fingers wanting to be picked up, leaning in Taliserra scooped her up. "Are you feeling better now Lashell?" She asked, holding her up she wiped some of the tears from her eyes. "Did the doctor's medicine make your stomach all better?"

Lashell nodded slightly and gave a small smile.

"Alright sweetie" Doctor Ross smiled.

"Thank you for your help, I'll be back if I find anything else she's allergic to." Taliserra said, she turned Lashell around a little to face Hope. "Say goodbye Lashell."

"Bye." Lashell said, waving a little. With that Taliserra headed for the exit.
