A call to alms

1,673 words; about a 8 minute read

Mission: The devil wears tripolymer
Location: Various
Timeline: immediately following 'the road to hell'

Exiting the turbolift Miranda quickly strode down the corridor, the Padd Taliserra had given her safely tucked under her arm, being asked to hand deliver orders wasn't unusual for her but she'd not had to do it for a while.

"Lt Ross, are you here?" She called out after entering sickbay.

Everyone in the medical bay at the time turned toward the voice coming from the entrance. However only Hope spoke "that's me" she answered and started toward the young woman calling her name.

"Some orders from the Captain for you Sir." Cameron told the woman and offered her the Padd. (See ooc for rough outline of the orders)

"Thank you" Hope said with a smile and immediately started reading the information on the Padd sent by the Captain. It seemed things were pretty bad down on the planet and there was a huge need for aid both medical and humanitarian. There was also a reminder in the information sent by Captain Tigran that the transporters were down and the teams would have full use of the runabouts.

Doctor Ross went over to a supply closet and started gathering items that she knew would be needed planet side. She also holstered a phaser, just incase there was trouble she wanted to be prepared. Field kit's were the biggest items she grabbed, they came equipped with a medical tricorder, hypo spray, dermal regenerator and a few other medical devices. They would mostly be triaging and possibly setting up a field hospital.

"Doctor Sol" Hope called out to the other side of sickbay "I'd like you to join me" she knew the Doctor was more then capable of handling a tough situation.

"Of course," Sol replied swiftly, moving to gather more supplies, his Vulcan genes allowing him to carry more. He would have been dissatisfied if unable to accompany her. He would never have shown it, but he would not have appreciated being left behind. "Is there anything you need me to take?"

"I've pulled a few field med kit" she looked over at her fellow Doctor "I figure we will set up a field hospital eventually, but for now anything you think we might need that isn't in a standard med kit." Doctor Ross knew the other physicians record and was confident she made the right choice. Hope was moving from one supply closet to another "You never know what we are going to see" she said looking in the direction of Doctor Sol.

"A career in Starfleet has shown me that is the only certainty," he agreed, and the irony of the statement was intended. He moved to her with cases both over his shoulders by straps and carried securely in firm hands. "I am ready when you are, Doctor."

Hope gave a nod and grabbed the rest of her supplies and toward the turbo lift they went. The ride from deck six to ten didn't take long and was almost awkwardly silent. "Here we are" Hope said with a smile as they entered the doors of the shuttle bay.

"Lt Ross." One of the shuttlebay attendants called out to her. "We just got the call, the Volga will be ready for you in a few minutes.

"Very good" Hope replied, turning to her follow physician "shall we, Doctor Sol?"

Sol nodded firmly moving up into the shuttle to secure the equipment, without even really thinking about it. "I believe we have people already on the ground? Do we have any reports to help with expectations?"

“We do” Doctor Ross took a seat after storing the equipment she had brought from sickbay. “Plenty of wounded sadly” she paused and looked over at the other Medical Officer “the reports from Ensign Kore are pretty gruesome. Androids have basically slaughtered dozens.”

Sol moved to settle in his seat, his Vulcan features cool and unmoved despite the description. Inside, he felt a stirring though, a sensation close to illness in his stomach. He ignored it and looked to the window, hoping it wouldn't be a long trip.

As the shuttle touched down, Sol considered the good fortune of a safe trip. All things considered, including mysterious transporter accidents, he had expected a more sinister turn of events. But as the hatch opened and he walked down the ramp, loaded up with boxes and bags that seemed too many for one man to carry, it appeared that they had survived the trip, only to arrive in a desperate situation.

Hope was up and grabbing a medical kit and holstering a phaser just in case “let’s go.” She picked up more medical supplies and started toward the exit.

Stood several meters away from where the runabout had landed there stood a Vulcanoid male clearly waiting for them, as the two blue uniformed people emerged from their ship he approached. "Welcome to alpha trionus, your help is greatly appreciated."

“Glad we can help” she smiled “I’m doctor Ross and this is doctor Sol.”

"My name is Hamma, the compound is a short walk this way." He extended his hands toward Hope. "May I assist you."

Hope took the offered hand for a moment and responded with a polite “thank you” once she was out of the small craft. “Would you mind helping with some of the supplies?”

"Of course" Hamma replied and headed into the runabout returning a few moments later with several supply boxes in hand. "This way." He began to lead the two in the direction of the compound. After a short walk the he led them through a path that looked seldom used and passed under trees that disguised an entrance.

It was an effective disguise, Hope didn’t see it until they were very close.

"Do you have a casualty report?" Sol asked as he walked with them, carrying supplies as if it were nothing. He seemed not to take much notice to remain focussed on the job at hand. But he did notice. A lot. He took in the surroundings, and immediately considered the difficulty in keeping sickness at bay in such a medical area.

"I do not, I'm not one of the medical staff." Hamma replied as he led the two through the compound towards where they were keeping their wounded. "Doctor Amara and your crew member will be able to give you a suitable report."

"Lieutenant Ross, Lieutenant Sol." Came a voice from not too far away as a red collared officer came down the corridor towards them. "Glad to see you're here, Ensign Kore could certainly use your help." Amanda said.

Ross gave a nod and started looking around the room at the wounded and waiting to be briefed. “Glad we can assist” Doctor Ross gave a nod and slight smile.

Cameron eventually made her way into view and was equally surprised to see Hope and Sol, she'd not heard anything about extra help. "Glad you're here Doctor. There are far too many here for me and Dr Amara to treat by ourselves."

"What are we dealing with here?" Sol asked, his face as placid as any Vulcan's might be, but his body held an echo of tension in it. The ex-marine knew the smell of death when he was around it.

"I've triaged as many as I can." Cameron began to reply. "There's a lot of cases of malnutrition as its associated effects, there isn't enough food stockpiled here for the amount of people crammed into here."

"Any outbreaks?" Sol asked measuredly, despite it being his main concern. With fragile people so close together, it was the kind of conditions that disease thrived in. And an outbreak was the last thing they needed on top of everything else.

Cameron shook her head slightly. "Nothing I've noticed yet, the populace seems to be in pretty good health. With this many people here though if their sanitation breaks down we could be looking at a whole range of potential diseases."

“I was thinking the same thing” doctor Ross opened her medkit for the tricorder. “We brought cases of food and water rations along with water and basic medical supplies the shuttle.” She stuck the tricorder in her lab jacket pocket “let’s work on unloading the supplies” she paused and looked around “I’m sure our pilot will be glad to help and then we can finish triage and formulate a treatment plan.”

"I will start to unpack," Sol assured quickly, already moving to lift a crate up onto one shoulder, and tucking another one under his arm. The gruelling physical training he put himself through worked with his Vulcan genes to make him useful when it was time to get stuck in, so he put himself to work.

Hope was impressed by Sol however she could only carry a crate if food rations at a time. “I really hope there isn’t anymore trouble” the human woman admitted as they unpacked and organized humanitarian supplies.

Sol nodded as he shifted crates for them to better unpack, setting out the lids for them to use as makeshift tables. Something suspiciously like a frown came to his features, although he would say that it was just concentration rather than what she had said. "I believe the human phrase is 'sitting ducks'," he admitted as he glanced around the penned in area.

"The facility is quite well hidden." Amanda told the group as she joined in helping them unpack. "though the androids probably tracked the runabout coming down there are only a couple of concealed entrances. Any attack would be bottlenecked pretty well." She lowered her voice before continuing. "But they still don't stand much of a chance."

Doctor Ross wasn’t much of a tactician but she would do her best if they faced danger “well” she paused “let’s try and get some of these people taken care of.”
