Mission: A marathon not a sprint
Location: Security office
Timeline: MD01 mid afternoon

On:

Finally released from the brig Ensign Joran was looking at getting back to work, he'd probably never live down the shame of being put in the very same brig part of his responsibility to keep watch over would be but if he was going to wind up in there for anything defending the honour of his girlfriend would be that thing.

Heading into the security center he immediately spotted a new face, a somewhat older than him Bajoran woman, "Good day Petty Officer." He called out to the woman.

“Good day.” the Bajoran stood from the chair she occupied and smiled “Petty Officer Jaarre.”

"Ensign Joran, haven't seen you around here before." Joran said then asked the question he already knew the answer to. "Did you come onboard when we stopped at Mazar?"

“Yes sir that is correct” Zize answered with a slight nod.

"How are you settling in? He asked.

“She’s a fine ship and my bunk is more than enough for me” Zize replied. “Thank you for asking” it wasn’t everyday that people bother to check on the petty officers aboard.

"You're welcome." Joran smiled slightly. "Is this your first starship assignment or have you served somewhere else before joining us?"

“I served aboard the USS Dallas before my assignment here” Zize reported with a slight smile as she was proud of her time in Starfleet.

"The Dallas... an Intrepid class I think right? good ships to be on." Joran perched himself on the edge on a console as he spoke.

“That is correct” the Bajoran smiled “it was an honor to serve on the Dallas, especially as my first assignment in Starfleet.”

"Did you get into much action over there?" He asked. "We've had quite an interesting time so far this year, a bunch of pirates keep showing up attacking federation facilities all around these couple of sectors."

“We saw our fair share of trouble” Zize admitted “but luckily we always managed to resolve each situation with minimal casualties.”

"Some good stories I hope, fighting off a Nausicaan twice your size with just a spoon." He said with a chuckle. "You know, that sorta thing."

“Well it wasn’t that bad” she let out a chuckle. “However I do have some stories. There was one mission we were on.” Zize paused and thought back for a second “we encountered an unknown group of aliens and let’s just say they didn’t like outsiders in their territory. I was on the security detail and we did end up in hand to hand combat. They were strong and fast.”

"I don't really have any good stories yet, best I have is from our shoreleave last week, me and Ensign Larson from engineering were at a bar and some guys were saying some pretty nasty things about her." Joran smiled as he recalled what he could of the fight. "Was a good scrap."

“Defending the honor of a lady “is well honorable” she smiled. “How did it turn out” Zize was curious.

"Started off well," Joran said in a sarcastic voice. "Had the more aggressive one who started swinging first in a choke hold, nearly had him subdued till his friend smashed a bottle on my back, had to get a bit more forceful after that. Few broken bones here and there."

“Could have been far worse” she took a sip from her beverage and smiled at him.

Joran smiled back. "Definitely, luckily his friend was drunk enough to miss my head with the bottle. Risian police grabbed him not long after I put him down, then pulled me off the first guy, locked all three of us up but handed me off to the XO."

“And how did that go” Zize asked with a cringe.

"Last I heard he was fine apart from a few broken bones, the Xo threw me in the brig for a few days." Joran replied. "Word of advice, don't try and sleep off a hangover on a brig bed, it's not a lot of fun."

“Not exactly made for comfort” she shot him a smile.

"Definitely not." Joran gave a small smile back. "That's my best story so far but if you want war stories ask Ensign Turell, she has tales from fighting all sorts and has the scars to prove it."

"I've got plenty of my own" Zize rolled her eyes thinking about the time in the Bajoran militia. "Fighting in the militia was, well it was hard at times. However we seemed to keep staying alive" she smiled at Joran.

"You were Bajoran Militia before joining Starfleet?" Joran asked, with Bajor joining the federation a few years ago it made sense that a lot of militiamen were offered positions in starfleet.

"Aye" she said with a smile. "Starfleet is a much smoother operation" the Bajoran woman admitted.

"Well you had to do a lot with not a lot of resources, everything goes smoother when you have all the toys," Joran moved to one of the weapons lockers as he talked to check out his sidearm for the shift. "I remember doing a three day field exercise at the academy. They had us leave all our combadges, tricorders and a lot of other stuff behind and dropped us off in the middle of nowhere with a low quality map and limited supplies. One group got completely lost and nearly starved before a rescue was finally called, for a lot of the officers it was hell and that was only three days, your resistance lived it for years."

Zize stared at him in silence as she listened to the words coming out of his mouth. "You are right, but we made it through" a slight smile flashed on her face but only for a moment.

Hadir had finished with all of the onboarding procedures and he thought it was time to meet his team. As he made his way through the ship he received a number of smiles and greetings. However, he received an equal number of surprise looks and scowls. He was used to the looks and the comments, it only served to make him work harder to show everyone that his people could be more than the sum of their parts.

Hadir ducked his head as he stepped into the Security Office and without looking up he spoke. "Afternoon everyone. No need to stand on my account I am here to assume command of this department. I am Lieutenant Hadir Pre..." His voice trailed off as he noticed the Bajoran for the first time. Hadir took pains to avoid Bajorans as it was in fact too painful for him. Yet, here they were and he knew this day would come eventually. "...nar." he finished his statement.

At a sliver over 6ft himself Joran didn't often feel small but compared to the Cardassian that just entered the room, her certainly did today. He glanced to Jaarre before looking back at Hadir. "Welcome to the ship Sir." He said.

"Thank you Ensign. Forgive me I rushed aboard and did not have time to familiarize myself with the manifest." Hadir chided himself for that fact. It did not look well that he did not know the names of the people on his team.

"Ensign Joran Sir." Joran said then motioned to Jaare. "And this is Petty Officer Zize, she is new to the ship too. Only came onboard a few hours ago.

The Bajoran gave a silent nod.

"Well, that means that we are all going to have to get settled in together. Tell me Ensign are there any security issues that I should be made aware of." Hadir attempted to turn the conversation to business as he did not want to make the Petty Officer any more uncomfortable than they already were.

"You'd have to check with Lieutenant Volsung about that Sir," Joran replied. "He has kept the department running while we waited for command to find us a new chief. I have only just returned to duty after a.... incident." He shot a look to Jaarre.

"Of course..." Hadir said in response to checking in with Volsung. "...Care to talk about the incident. I would like to get to know everyone that I am working with." He noticed that Jaare was silent, this was to be expected. Hadir wondered if he should set up a private meeting, then he thought the better of it. If issues arose he would deal with them as they happened. Silence of course was not an issue.

"A little over indulgence while we were on shoreleave Sir, nothing serious." Joran said trying to keep his voice from stammering. He definitely didn't want to tell his new boss he got intro a drunken fight on Risa.

Hadir smiled in that way that only Cardassians could and raised a finger. "Then I hope we learned our lesson and will stick with the synthetics from now on. Although the fake stuff cannot beat a real glass of kanar."

Zize stared at Hadir as he spoke but remained silent.

"So, can either of you tell me how the crew usually is on their off time? I am looking to see what the security risks are while in normal operations. Are their fights, crimes anything of that sort?" Hadir knew that by and large things like that did not happen on Federation starships. However, he did want to learn everything and anything about this crew.

“Not a lot, but it happens” the Bajoran replied firmly.

"We have a mix of older experienced crew and quite a lot of new blood," Joran told him. "most of them behave themselves most of the time. A few disagreements here and there but nothing serious."

"Well that is good to hear. Do either of you have a preference for duty shift? I plan on moving Security to a four shift rotation. Six hours each shift, more time to yourselves to enjoy life." Hadir smiled and took a seat behind the desk. "I have found that more off time makes for happier and more focused crew members."

Zize appreciated the extra time to her self but had no preferred shift “I’m good with any of them” she said with any.

"I'm not a morning person so I'd prefer a later shift than Alpha," Joran somewhat sheepishly replied. "but I can work with either."

"Then I will make sure you get to come to work after breakfast and coffee." Hadir said with a smile. "Right, so do either of you have anything you need or would like to bring up?"

Joran shook his head. Until he got the heads up on what had happened the last few days he didn't know much about what had been going on.

Zize smiled as she was up to any shift.

Seeing as no one brought up anything Hadir thought this was good place to end this little gathering. "I would like you to know that my door is always open should you need it. For the time being I see no reason that you cannot go and enjoy yourselves."

"Aye Sir. Petty Officer Zize do you fancy a little time on the range?" Joran asked.

"Always up for a little target practice" Zize smiled.
