1,153 words; about a 6 minute read

Mission: A marathon not a sprint
Location: Ready Room USS Wolff
Timeline: MD01 1545 hrs

Hadir arrived at Mazar shipyards with the hope that he would have some time to himself. However, his Bolian pilot that brought him over from Caspian Prime had taken the longest route possible. As such Hadir just learned that the Wolff would be leaving imminently. After checking in with the yard's quartermaster he had his belongings transferred to the Wolff, and in a matter of minutes he arrived at the transporter room. "One to transfer to the USS Wolff. Energize when ready." he said to the Chief at the controls. Moments later Hadir found himself aboard the Luna Class vessel and jogging through the ship.

The strange looks that the large Cardassian got as he made his way through the ship did not go unnoticed to him. Can't be helped. he thought. When he arrived at the door of the Ready Room he was slightly out of breath. Hadir took a moment to slow his breathing and straighten is uniform, then rang the chime.

In her ready room Taliserra was going over some last minute preparations for their departure, she hoped the Marathon would be ready on time, she looked up from her computer screen when the chime rang. "Come in."

The doors slid open and Hadir ducked his head as he stepped through the doors. He got very used to ducking during his time in Starfleet, the ships were not exactly built for someone his size. Once through he mustered to attention. "Lieutenant Hadir Prenar reporting as ordered Captain. My orders are serve as your Chief of Security and Tactical Officer." He stepped forward rather rigidly and placed the PADD which contained his orders on her desk, then stepped back.

Almost having to crane her neck back to take in the sheer size of the officer before her Tali paused for a moment before speaking, a Cardassian in a starfleet uniform was a very unexpected thing even twenty years after the Dominion war had ended. "Welcome onboard Lieutenant, you nearly didn't make it in time." She took the PADD and began to slim through it.

"Yes ma'am I wanted to apologize for that. The pilot who brought me here did not understand the haste in which I travelled. However, the nick of time is better than no time at all." Hadir smiled that broad smile that only Cardassians seemed able to do.

"I have had quite the influx of security officers today, I wonder if there is something Starfleet isn't telling me about our current assignment." Taliserra smiled slightly and handed the Padd back to him. "At ease Lieutenant, it's good to know I finally have a new head of the department now."

He spread his legs shoulder width apart and placed his hands behind his back at the order for at ease. "Thank you Captain. It is a pleasure to be here. Serving on a Luna Class is something I have wanted to do for some time. Are there any issues on the ship that I should be aware of?" He was eager to get to work.

'We're due to depart this system in less than an hour," Taliserra began, the Lieutenant having arrived too late for the senior staff briefing ahe decided to give him a quick brief. "Our assignment is to escort the ship in the berth next to us from here to the shipyard at Dakala, a simple A to B assignment, at least we hope." She paused as she thought back to the conversation with Lieutenant O'Sullivan barely an hour ago. "As for problems with the ship, a member of your department is a former maquis and there are several Bajorans amongst the crew, I hope they will act as starfleet crew should and not let prejudice govern their actions but even after all this time that is not guaranteed."

"I understand, it has become something that I am used to. I have to prove myself and so it will be. They will come to understand that Cardassians like every other race in the quadrant has their good and bad qualities." Hadir was worried now that he learned of this individuals. However, he did not let the worry show.

"If there are any issues do not hesitate to bring it to my or Commander Slattery's attention if you feel it is necessary." Taliserra said. She was glad that the man was more than aware of the potential prejudice's against his species and was willing to take what measure he could to handle it.

"I will be sure to do that. Although, it has been my experience that any comments about me I will not hear. That is to say most people are professional enough to keep it to themselves until they are off duty and I am out of earshot." As understanding as he was Hadir hated that this was a fact of life while he served in Starfleet.

What Hadir said was true, most people would rather murmur behind his back rather than confront him face to face but Taliserra still wanted to know if it happened. "Maybe but still bring anything you do hear to our attention, I won't tolerate it on my ship."

Hadir's mouth opened slightly as if he would protest to what the Captain had just said. However, in the moment he believed that to be an order so he stopped himself and simply said. "Aye Captain" He paused as he considered what he wanted to say next. "Captain, if I may. I would give any Bajoran on the ship a small amount of leeway where I am concerned. It can be quite hard to be forced to work with someone who is a symbol of what you have been raised to hate. That could take some time."

Again the Cardassian was right, even several decades after the occupation some people could and would hold grudges. "Perhaps, a few days to get it out of their system but anything physical, any threats I want to know."

"Agreed ma'am. You will be the first to know of anything. If that would be all Captain. I plan on meeting with the Security team and get to know them." Hadir was eager to get settled in and let the anxiety of everything move on.

Taliserra glanced at the clock on her Lcars screen, it was getting very close to their estimated departure time. "That will have to be all for now Lieutenant, I'm needed on the bridge very shortly" She told him. "But I would like to talk to you again after we get underway."

"Aye Captain." Hadir turned and left when permission was granted. He did not fully understand this crew or the Captain yet but, he knew that this would be the next and best chapter in his life. Something simply felt right about being aboard the Wolff.
