Mission:
A marathon not a sprint
Location: Office of the Chief of Security - Deck 8 - USS Wolff
Timeline: MD002 0900 hrs
[ON]
Lieutenant Magnus Volsung had heard that there was a new Chief Security. It was a role he himself had stepped into on a temporary basis while they were between Chiefs. Handing back the role would be strange, but Magnus was a pragmatist. There was always improvements to be made and the fact he was not yet Chief just meant he had to work more on the aspects that Starfleet felt he didn't have.
Perhaps it was because he wasn't the shouty Security Officer, or the one likely to blow his own trumpet. Or his lack of understanding of science. But speculating was pointless.
He had made sure to tidy up the office now he was on shift, although the Chief would already have been here. It had been the luck of the draw, he had been sleeping off duty when the man beamed over. Still. Did not hurt to put a good presentation. He went to sit down, taking the PADD and reading over it for a moment.
Hadir had weathered the onslaught of meetings that one has when they join a new assignment. Although he knew he had not met the rest of his team as of yet. At the moment he longed to return to his office raise the temperature and relax with a glass of kanar.
As he made his way through the ship he smiled at those he had met. Most of the crew was genial and welcomed him with open arms. Hadir stepped through the door of his office and was rather startled to see someone already there. "Morning Lieutenant. My apologies I still have not learned everyone on the manifest..." This was a small lie. Hadir had edietic memory and new this man to be Lieutenant Magnus Volsung his assistant chief. However, the Cardassian actually did not like to let people know of his memory skills. "...And we have not had a chance to meet. I am Hadir Prenar the new Chief."
"Magnus Volsung, former acting Chief," Magnus introduced himself as he met his eyes. "I hope you don't mind me dropping by with the reports. I've written up Security summaries from the last missions, plus the last crew reviews. I thought it might be helpful as you...settle." He watched the Cardassian with calm brown eyes, no animosity in them. If he was disappointed to be put back into the Assistant role he didn't show it. Nor did he show any distrust or concern about a Cardassian before him, despite being the age to have served during the war.
"Excellent! Quite efficient of you. Thank you. Please have a seat, tell me a little about what happens on this ship. The crew, and how they interact." Hadir took a seat behind the desk. His comment on efficiency is high praise from a Cardassian and it was true. He was impressed with the Lieutenant and now wondered why he was given this posting with Volsung around.
Magnus nodded and sat down, watching him before he smiled. "You are getting a very good team, so I want to start with them," he said, wanting to make sure he knew that. "Experience mixed with youth. Ensign Joran, for instance..." he brought up his file and handed it over. "Somewhat inexperienced, a bit rash, but his heart is in the right place. Great at hand to hand."
"Excellent! Do we have any investigators on the team? As much as having good combatants is something we need, I feel we need detectives as well. Often times we will be called on to investigate a matter." Hadir would not forget that Security was also responsible for law enforcement aboard a vessel.
"Not per say," Magnus said as he met his eyes. "All Security personnel have the training, but nothing stood out in the records as a specialism." He gave him a small smile, because as much time as he had spent with people's records and getting to know them, it was more as the security and tactical side of them. There had not been anything on the ship yet that required a full...investigation. "It certainly wasn't something I specialized in at the Academy."
"That is understood. It is something that at times is remiss at the Academy. Let us set up some criminal investigative drills. I believe some may call it a murder mystery. This way we can test our people's skills. After all our department is responsible for criminal investigations aboard this vessel as well." It was a personal goal of sorts for Hadir. To make sure that he had a well rounded team aboard the Wolff.
"Yes Sir," Magnus said, nodding at the words. He suspected Turell would be a natural at it. Drake...well, with guidance, it might be just what he needed as well. "I also understand there's a new Security Lieutenant, but I haven't had the chance to read his file. I was preparing for you to arrive."
"Right then we will wade into this together. Lets give it a once over and see where we are at. Forgive me I still have not brought myself up to speed. So, who is the new Lieutenant?" There was a lot more than Hadir had initially thought to be brought up to speed on. However, he was sure that in the next day with the help of his eidetic memory he should be in a good place.
"Lieutenant Junior Grade Brendan O'Sullivan, that's all I got," Magnus said and sat back in his chair. "Also, for your awareness, we have two Security personnel over at the USS Marathon at the moment. Ensign Amanda Turell and Ensign Eden Drake. The Marathon has a skeletal crew and while we're in Federation space, I thought it...prudent to make sure we had someone from Security over there."
"Good thinking." Hadir replied and then brought up the file of this O'Sullivan. "Now, lets see what we have here. Looks like he has had a fairly distinguished career in Starfleet thus far. On paper he seems like a model officer. However, that can be deceiving. We are going to have to meet with him, get to know the person behind the file as it were."
"Of course," Magnus said, having always found files fine for dates and medals...but it was all second-hand information. Whoever wrote recommendations and such gave the clean, presentable version of events more often than not. Especially if it was a model officer. "And once Turell and Drake get back, I suggest you meet with them as well. They're both interesting people with great potential." He had been spending time with Drake during shore leave and had gotten a good understanding of the man.
"Sounds good. Once they are back we can set up some meetings. For the immediate future we are going to move security to a four shift rotation, six hours each. I will have a copy of the new duty schedule by tomorrow. Once I give it to you please see that it is distributed." Hadir smiled as the wheels in his head already spun to see how things could be improved, more efficient. "If there is nothing else. I think we have a good place to start."
"I...would speak to the Captain if I were you. About the six hour shift rotations," Magnus said and nodded, taking a deeper breath. "But there is nothing else, Sir. Welcome onboard."
"Thank you!" Hadir replied. When Volsung left Hadir let out a rather large sigh. It seemed everyone he had met thus far was nervous, and somewhat distracted around him. Of course he knew why and that was why he sighed. Hadir wished things could be different. However, he would have to once again prove himself.
Volsung left with a small smile, finding himself thinking that if he had to hand over the department to someone, Lieutenant Hadir Prenar was a good man for it. Odin willing, they would be entering a new age for the department.
