Mission:
A marathon not a sprint
Location: Phaser Range - Deck 8 - USS Wolff
Timeline: MD011 1030 hrs
[On]
Part of his duties as the new Chief was to evaluate his team and how well they performed. Well at least that is what he thought part of his duty was. As such he called the Captain and his team to the range for some target shooting. Hadir's goal was to gauge where everyone was, and see where or if any work was needed.
Glad that so far things with the Marathon were going well Taliserra found herself with a little more available time than usual and when she was invited to watch the security team practice by the new chief she decided the take the opportunity and soon she was in an area seldom visited by herself.
"Good day Lieutenant." She said to the Cardassian as she entered the range and saw him already in there waiting..
"Captain... Welcome. Going to make sure the team is in top form. Can never be too prepared I always say." Hadir smiled ear to ear as he laid out the phasers and phaser rifles that would be used during the exercise.
Zize entered the range and remained silent but gave a nod and smile to her superiors. The Bajoran noticed the phasers laid out and stood with her hands folded behind her back.
Volsung appeared a minute later, looking at the Captain before he gave her a small nod and a smile. "Captain," he said before he took a spot next to his Chief. "Sir."
Next through the door was Joran, he was definitely surprised to see the Captain there. "Captain." Said in greeting as he passed and went to stood by Zize. "Boss." He then said to Hadir.
Seeing that everyone was now there Hadir smiled. "Team we are here to have some target practice. Along the way the Captain and myself will be evaluating your performance and looking to see where improvements can be made. As I am no doubt you are all aware readiness is the best thing that we can all do as a security team. So, with that choose your weapons and prepare. Any questions?"
Joran stepped forward and grabbed a holstered type II phaser and attached it to his waist before picking up and checking over one of the phaser rifles, he was looking forward to seeing how the new arrivals faired on the range, too bad Amanda wasn't there to show them how it's done.
Zize had picked up a Type II phaser and made sure it was set on the practice mode. "This should be fun" she smiled and glanced around at the other people getting ready for the session.
"I might try my hand at some point too if there are no objections, Lieutenant." Taliserra said. "It has been quite a while since I had to use a phaser."
"No objections Captain. It would be my pleasure and honor to evaluate your prowess with a phaser." Hadir smiled, his comment meant to be both truthful and a small joke.
Taliserra smiled. "First let's see your team in action."
"Of course Captain." Hadir began with a smile in the direction of Captain Tigran.
Hadir stood in front of the rest of the security team. "Ladies and gentlemen for this exercise the computer will present a number of targets to you all at the same time. Your task is to evaluate the targets and take out the threats while making sure the public is unharmed. Are there any questions?"
Volsung gave a small shake of his head, watching them. It was very clear instructions. And he liked that, clear instructions of a classic scenario...and he suspected that the Chief would throw some avalanches on their way.
"Ready to go Lieutenant." Joran said enthusiastically
Volsung couldn't help the smile at Joran's enthusiasm. He had a soft spot for the Ensign and just how excited he could get about things. "As am I, Sir."
"Very well, but one last thing before we begin. This scenario will present you with a scene and some people. It is a full interactive program. Your task is to find and neutralize the threat by any means necessary. However, you will be timed. If you do not succeed in the alotted time then the act will be committed and we will evaluate the performance. Now please stand ready." Hadir stood in front of his team as he spoke.
Hadir did not speak again until he saw that the team was ready for the task at hand. "Computer initiate Prenar training program Alpha one." Hadir spoke and then stepped back behind the rest of the team and next to the Captain. The hologrid dissolved into an urban street. There were six people on the street. One was a Klingon male who stood at a cart and seemed to be haggling with a Bolian who ran the merchant cart. A third person was a human who sat on a bench and read a book. The fourth and fifth was a mother and daughter combo. The mother seemed to be rushing the daughter across the street. The little girl stopped in the middle of the street and pointed at the Klingon. There was a bulge on the right hip of the child. The sixth and final person was a Vulcan who stood stoically on the street corner and observed the scene. Hadir leaned over to the Captain and whispered. "Now, it is up to them to find and neutralize the threat."
Joran looked around nothing seemed overly suspicious, even the kid pointing at the Klingon seemed normal, he found Klingons scary at that age. He decided to head over to the Klingon anyway, the man wasn't in a typical warriors outfit that most would be and that he appeared to be negotiating with the Bolian rather than threatening him was definitely unusual. "Gentlemen." He said greeting the two as he approached.
The Bolian and the Klingon turned to Joran. It was the Bolian who spoke first. "Can you believe that he wants to give me just five bars of latinum for this beautiful work of art. A statue made by the late Olivia Benson, an artist of Earth fame. I simply cannot it won't do." The Bolian seemed to ramble as Bolians are want to do. It was the Klingon's deep voice that cut the Bolian off. "It is all I have. I would also offer a bottle of blood wine the best vintage."
Volsung observed for a moment, seeing that Joran was figuring out things between the Bolian and Klingon.
Joran eyed up the Klingon with a little suspicious, Bolian traders were a dime a dozen but Klingon traders were extremely uncommon.
Volsung looked around, seeing the child on the street. His eyes flickered looking for the parent before he walked over towards the child, seeing as the parent...he assumed the woman, was distracted. "Hi there, are you okay?" he asked, giving the kid a gentle and disarming smile.
"Yeah I am fine... My mom won't let me shop..." The little girl began and was interrupted by her mom. "Now honey leave the officer alone. We have to go get your brother. Lets go..." She reached for the little girl as a vehicle came to a stop in the intersection with a horn blaring. Now, the little girl and mom were blocking the flow of traffic.
"We should get out of the way," Magnus said with a small smile, taking a step back. He quickly ran his eyes over the vehicle as well, taking in the details. "You have a good day you two."
When Magnus stepped back it seemed to happen all at once. The little girl reached for the bulge on her right hip. She drew out what appeared to be a Starfleet issue phaser. With deft and quick movements she fired at Volsung and screamed "For the Order." Before the phaser would hit Volsung in the back the program froze and Hadir stepped to the front. "There was something that you all clearly missed. The bulge on the little girl's right hip was a phaser. I wonder... Did it not seem out of place that a young girl and a large concealed bulge on her hip. Observe and report is always the key to a successful day or night as it were."
Magnus let out a breath, not of annoyance, but of humour. He looked over at him, studying him. "Smart move, the most innocent looking being the deadliest one. Never judge the ocean by the stillness of its water."
"Using a child to attack someone, that is inhumane." Joran called out, he'd barely had time to take in what had happened before the program had frozen.
Hadir turned to Joran. "Ensign if it means anything I am in agreement with you. Using a child in this manner would be wrong and dare I say downright evil. However, I would like you to ponder the following. There are species in this galaxy who are not children but can look like one, additionally not everyone has the same morals as you or I. When on an assignment you should assume that you and your team are the only ones who know the difference between right and wrong. Thusly anything can happen and anything is a potential threat. This was the meaning of this exercise."
"On most federation and even non federation facilities there are weapon scanners that can pick up virtually every type of weapon currently known about." Taliserra decided to remark having kept silent observing the team.
"Yes Captain, of course there are. However, these scanners do often exist on plants. Additionally when there is a method to detect there are many methods to get around. As security officers we should be prepared for anything. Most importantly this exercise was designed to test our observation skills. Scanners or no we should notice everything." Hadir thought that the team performed admirably. However, he now knew where improvement was needed.
Magnus looked at them for a moment before he smiled, clearly not having minded being called out or tripping a trap. It was all a learning experiment. "We don't always have the benefits of understanding the cultures we...end up interacting with," he said softly, looking at them. "Not everything is a weapon, even if it remains hidden. Equally...most things can be a weapon."
"Agreed! Call it the Cardassian in me but that is precisely the reason we should be ever vigilant." Hadir said with a small smile.
Magnus chuckled at that as he looked at him. He'd talk to him after, away from this, about why he thought there were cases where the benefit of the doubt had to be given. If you were suspicious of everything and everyone, you would never truly trust. Yet, there was a time and place for it, and he would not question his Chief in front of the rest of the team. "Again, Sir?"
"Yes. This time we can try a different scenario and see how it turns out." Hadir said with a broad grin. He could tell that with a very small amount of training this team is going to do quite well.
