Angel One

Angel One (or Angel 1) is a Class M planet similar in size and composition to Earth. It is one of two planets that orbit a pair of B5III main sequence stars known as Alpha Gruis and Al Nair, but more commonly known collectively as Angel. It is slightly more humid than typical Class M, spawning a very lush, green planet.
Relative to its size, Angel One has a small population that have reached a technological status similar to 21st Century Earth. It is ruled by a matriarchial society, one that only recognizes the male of their species as second-class citizens. Women hold absolute power, and serve in all important roles in the community. Men are strictly controlled and are only allowed to do labor-intensive or subservient roles. The government is based around the Parliament, consisting of six Mistresses and the leader called the Elected One.
In the mid-23rd Century, the Federation first made contact with the planet through Bolian representatives. By the dawn of the new century, the Federation Council decided their prescence was corrupting the Angelian's development process and the last vessel left in 2302. Contact was re-established, however, in 2364 when the USS Enterprise-D arrived looking for survivors from the lost SS Odin that had hit an asteroid seven years prior. (TNG: "Angel One")
By the time of Enterprise's visit, there had been a slight shift in public opinion towards perhaps giving men more rights. Given the planet's position close to Romulan space, the Federation has always held out hope in bringing the Angelians into the UFP. Since the Dominion War, a few moderates have gotten into positions of power and have pushed for equal rights. The men have begun to speak for themselves as well. However, the Parliament remains in control of conservative members and very little progress has been made. Within the last ten years, several small bands of Angelian males have created "resistance cells" that use everything from proproganda to terrorism to achieve the ultimate goal of equality.
