Antedean

A civilization native to the Alpha Quadrant. They are a race of icthyohumanoids (fish-like humanoids) from the planet Antede III. Scale hues range from bluish-white to purplish-silver, and they have no body hair. They have head-fins instead of hair and on their chin grow two long tentacles. They also have large, bulbous eyes and webbed hands.

Despite possessing the capability, Antedeans find spaceflight extremely traumatic and survive the ordeal by entering a self-induced catatonic state. Awakening from this can take several hours. Upon arrival at the end of a voyage, Antedeans require great quantities of food, known as vermicula to replenish their bodies. Few humans have seen an Antedean in the flesh. Antedeans have unsophisticated minds that could be easily read by Betazoids; Klingons consider them to be a handsome race.

First contact with the Antedeans took place in 2344. A year later, the USS Lexington hosted a diplomatic conference between the UFP and Antede III. Ambassador Curzon Dax represented the Federation.

In 2365, the USS Enterprise-D escorted two Antedean dignitaries from Antede III to a conference on planet Pacifica. Here the Antedeans were to be given an opportunity to join the Federation. However, upon transport down to Pacifica it was revealed, by Ambassador Lwaxana Troi, that they were in fact assassins and their robes were lined with ultritium. They had planned on blowing up the entire conference. (TNG: "Manhunt")

Antede III joined the Federation in 2380.
