Position Description

The Bartender: Possibly one of the most important roles in the Civilian Affairs department to date. The Bartender, also known as the barkeep, is usually a person who can be talked to, someone with extensive knowledge in all forms of beverage and sometimes cuisine as well, and usually has a shrewd mind for business.

A bartender is usually able to guess, most of the time, what sort of drink their customer would prefer, depending on mood, race, gender, species, time of day, current mission status, and even through talking to the person for a bit first and getting to know what kind of person they are.

For starships, usually the barkeep can be found tending bar in the main lounge. On some starships, there are other mess halls and lounges, but the main bar is located in the main lounge, and this main bar is the bartender's home domain. A good example of this is the widely documented Guinan who served on board the USS Enterprise-D captained by Jean-Luc Picard. Guinan could almost always be found in the 10 Forward Lounge, tending bar, talking to someone, or simply being a listening ear. Knowing her customers well, Guinan was able to suggest the right drink nearly every time.

For starbases and stations however, a barkeep is usually the owner of his or her own business. One good example of this is Quark who owns his own business - Quark's - on Deep Space 9. With good business tactics, good knowledge of his customer base and his goods, Quark's business was successful, so successful in fact that he often attracted the attention of the Station's Chief of Security, Odo.

Technically there is no 'school of bartenders' where these people learn the trade and the tricks involved. Where bartenders learn their trade from can vary, from observation, experimentation in getting into the business alone, to having a type of mentor they are employed under who teaches them what they know. One thing is for certain, and that is while drinks and foods are common knowledge among bartenders, with the knowledge of new concoctions and recipes shared all the time, every bartender is their own quirky original self.
