Bio-neural circuitry

Bio-neural circuitry is a technology incorporated in bioneural gel packs. It was incorporated into Federation starships from around 2371. Some of the usual isolinear circuitry had been replaced with bio-neural cells - they can process information more efficiently, and hence speed up response time on a computer system. The USS Voyager was one of the first vessels to be equipped with such systems.

These cells can be affected by viruses and infections that would affect normal living organisms. When this occurred on Voyager, the Doctor suggested that a human sometimes has a fever when feeling ill - B'Elanna Torres used an inverted warp field to super-heat the vessel and kill the bacterium infecting the bio-neural circuits. As a result of this problem, and Voyager's inability to procure replacement gel packs, attempts were made to replace those systems reliant on bio-neural circuitry with more conventional technology.
