The information contained on this page has not been accepted by Obsidian Fleet's Research and Development department and is thus not an available ship class for a sim.

The Breen “Cruiser” class apparently grew out of the same design program as their “Frigates”, although full production did not go into effect until 2370, presumably after the smaller ship’s faults were corrected. Like most Breen vessels, the overall shape is asymmetrical to say the least. The hull is split by a crescent-shaped wing, with the larger dorsal section offset from the lower engineering hull. Inboard on each side of the wing are the warp nacelles. Most of the ship’s weapon stations are found in pods attached near the ends of the wing, while a flatten, elliptical deflector dish is slung underneath. The impulse engines are housed in a trapazoidal structure to the rear. Interior layout, sensor capabilities, and engine types remain a mystery---much like everything else related to the Breen. It has been speculated that the unique and odd design may have been done to confuse attackers. Some organic materials have been incorporated into the design, but for what purpose is still not known.

Nearly identical to the Frigate to the untrained eye, the Cruiser is a much different ship. The speed and maneuverability that had made the Frigates so dangerous gave way to more traditional tougher armor, shields, and heavier weapon systems. The Cruisers were obviously made to be the “heavy hitters” of the Breen fleet, and they proved that during the Dominion War. The class stunned the Federation Alliance fleet at the Second Battle of Chin’toka when it used to deadly effect a previously unknown energy-dampening weapon. This weapon used energy dissipators to drain the power from shields, weapons, and engines leaving them completely vulnerable to attack. Klingon vessels were able to be quickly modified to be immune from the weapon, leaving them to bear the blunt of the fighting until Federation and Romulan ships could be adapted. Once this occurred, the Dominion forces discontinued its use (although the Breen Cruisers still mount the weapon to this day). Even without the use of its secret weapon, the cruiser was still to be respected as it gave good account for itself in head-to-head battles with the D’deridex and Vor’cha classes. As the Alliance began to push the Dominion back into Cardassian space, the Cruiser’s Achilles’ heel was discovered: weak impulse engine manifolds. This would be exploited with great effect at the Battle of Cardassia, forcing the Breen fleet to disengage and flee.

After the war, the Breen were quick to fix the problem with the Cruisers...fearing reprisals from the Romulans especially. They continue, however, to rely on torpedoes as their main weapon. The disruptors mounted on the ship are powerful, but have longer charge times compared to other species’ types. Likewise, the energy-dampening weapon appears to be a one or two-shot deal, requiring several minutes to recycle. Also added was a cloaking device, believed to be of their own origin.

The opportunity to exploit a weakened Cardassian Union has also been too great for the Breen to pass up, and their Cruisers have been seen trolling around the fridges of their space attacking unsuspecting ships that cross their path.

Defensive Systems

Weapons

  • Torpedo launchers (similar to Federation pulse-fire torpedo launchers): 4
  • Torpedoes: 250 (est.) Note: Possibly developing a quantum type.
  • Disrupters (believed to be copies of the Cardassian System 4): 6
  • Energy-dampening weapon: 1

Shielding

  • Heavy Armor (unknown type)
  • Shielding (unknown auto-modulating type)
  • Cloaking device

Auxiliary Craft

At least one launch bay has been observed, with an estimated capacity for 10-12 shuttles or fighters.
