Position Description

The traditional title of Captain is given to whoever is in command of a ship, in this case a merchant Starship. A captain doesn't always legally own the ship under his or her command, when they don't own the ship they report to both the legal owner and the (local) authorities. They are the ones ultimately responsible for the safety and health of the crew and the contents of the cargo hold. When the ship lacks a purser the Captain also handles the payrolls and makes sure there is enough money on board to pay the crew as well as overseeing the slop chest (these duties can be shared with the First mate). The captain is the face of the operation, keeps in contact with current and potential clients. The captain also has special responsibilities when the ship or its cargo are damaged, when the ship causes damage to other vessels or facilities and in the case of injury or death of a crewmember or passenger. The captain acts as a liaison to local investigators and is responsible for providing complete and accurate logbooks, reports, statements and evidence to document an incident.

Character Development Ideas

  • Contrary to Starfleet Captains the civilian captain has a choice. Will the business he or she conducts be entirely legitimate or will they dabble in the shades of grey as well? Will they conduct any business that comes their way or do they have a moral code?
  • How does their moral code stand up once they hit a dry spell in cargo contracts (due to competition or other influences)? Will they abandon their 'never do business with an Orion'-rule of thumb for an easy buck?
