Originally known as helm, CONN Officer or Astro Navigator, the Chief Flight Control Officer position is now combined for all the functions of flight control and navigation with a starship. A Flight Control Officer must always be present on the bridge of a starship when underway. While all of the functions of flight control is computer assisted and automated, personel are still required when circumstances require manual flight control and impromptu flight navigation deviation.

The chief Flight Control officer is also responsible for ensuring that all staff under their supervision maintain up-to-date piloting certifcations, and therefore must see to it that all pilots aboard ship that report to them log the required number of flight hours per month to retain their Certifications.

The Chief Flight Control Officer is the senior most flight control officer aboard a starship, starbase or facility, serving as a senior officer and chief of all flight control personnel. He is a member of the Command staff and reports to the Captain or Executive officer.
