Position Description

The Federation standard word engineer is derived from the Latin (an old Earth language) root ingenium, meaning "cleverness". The engineer's first responsibility on the ship is ensuring the engine keeps running and the vessel doesn't fall apart.

In Starfleet the Chief Engineer oversees an entire department of Engineers, on most civillian vessels it goes back more to the original meaning of the word. An engineer is tasked with keeping everything running and due to this responsibility a high demand is asked on his or her cleverness.

The Engineer makes the maintenance schedules, keeps track of which machines and equipment need repairs, upgrades or replacements. The Engineer works together with the Boatswain to keep track of current maintenance programs and in case of emergency the Engineer will conduct emergency repairs by order of the Bosun. In spare time the Engineer can be called upon to teach emergency repair routines to the Deck Hands (both able and ordinary).

Character Development Ideas

  • Civilian engineers usually take a lot of pride in being able to take the limited resources available and being able to keep the vessel afloat.
  • The (Chief) Engineer of a civilian vessel is tasked with making sure the deck hands are able to respond appropriately in case something breaks down. The effectiveness of emergency fire fighting or repair teams is an immediate reflection on the engineer.
