The enlisted rates (or ranks) for enlisted personnel have both formal names and informal names, just as commissioned officer ranks do. Formal names should be used when the occasion calls for it, the informal name should be used most of the time though.
The informal names appear in italics.
- Starfleet Enlisted Ranks (in descending order of seniority)
- Master Chief Petty Officer (MCPO) Referred to as Master Chief or Chief
- Senior Chief Petty Officer (SCPO) Referred to as Senior Chief or Chief
- Chief Petty Officer (CPO) Referred to as Chief
- Petty Officer First Class (PO1) Referred to as Petty Officer
- Petty Officer Second Class (PO2) Referred to as Petty Officer
- Petty Officer Third Class (PO3) Referred to as Petty Officer
- Crewman (CN) Referred to as Crewman
- Crewman Apprentice (CA) Referred to as Crewman
- Crewman Recruit (CR) Referred to as Crewman
- Starfleet Marine Enlisted Ranks (in descending order of seniority)
- Sergeant Major (SGTMAJ)
- Master Sergeant (MSGT) Occasionally Referred to as Top.
- Gunnery Sergeant (GYSGT) Occasionally Referred to as Gunny.
- Staff Sergeant (SSGT)
- Sergeant (SGT)
- Corporal (CPR)
- Lance Corporal (LC)
- Private First Class (PFC)
- Private (PVT)
Marine Ranks are never shortened or abbreviated like their Starfleet counterparts. Informal ranks are used sparingly.
