Home to an unsual neutron-red giant binary star, the Kavis Alpha System is one of the most studied in the galaxy thanks to a unique feature. Every 196 years, the neutron star (Kavis Alpha A) sucks matter from the nearby red giant (Kavis Alpha B). Through an immense chemical reaction, there is a violent explosion on the neutron that expels the matter into space. The USS Enterprise-D witnessed this event in 2366.

The system is also home to four planets, although none are inhabitable by humanoid life. During its study of the system, the Enterprise was threatened with a catastrophic computer failure from a nanite infestation. The nanites were later convinced to leave the ship and inhabit Kavis Alpha IV, a Class G planet.
