The Kol are a powerfully Psionic race, thousands of years old, and reknown for their complete disregard for other life. Forming a system of government involving linking their minds togetherm they will often refer to their Empire as Unity

General Species Outline

A Species

The Kol are a humanoid species, with their most noticeable physical features are their entire species having black or white hair, and their piercing blue eyes. But after that, the other differences between a Kol and a human are almost unnoticeable (slightly taller, thinner bone structure, raised cheekbones and sharply angled faces). But physical likeness is where the similarities end. The Kol are a race of powerful Psionics (higher mental abilities allowing for different abilities). Their powers range from being able to move things, to powerful energy projection, to even the manipulation of space and time. A shared gift is telepathy, which has led to the construction of their Empire under a single name, Unity.

Our Minds Are One

Unity. A word implying everything is one. And amongst the Kol, everything is owned by the group. They share a conscious, and as a result information is shared almost instantaneously through the Unity. At a young age, Kol are encouraged to experiment with nanotechnology to improve their Psionics abilities and to better connect with the group.

History

In The Beginning

Unity was born on the planet Kol ten thousand years ago. The Kol first lived in small tribes, devastating each other with their minds. Having pushed themselves into a deep seated war, mind-on-mind, and hatred powerful in their minds, they used their great Psionics as a weapon. This would lead them to a path of near destruction. However, after only existing as a species for a hundred and sixty years, something odd occurred. A tribe of female Kol banded together, linking their minds, and through this, they shared emotion on an unprecedented level. This sudden wave of power drew Kol from across the planet's only continent. All wanted to be part of this great feeling. It took years for all to gather, but they did. And as they arrived, each new mind linked, adding more power, more knowledge. And, in the period of four years, the Kol became one, they became Unity.

Prosperous Futures

For the next four millennia, the Kol advanced as a powerful race, quickly industrializing, and reaching space travel in only four hundred years. Their Empire grew, covering twelve solar systems in only a few hundred years. And by the end of the third millennia warp technology was widely used, fleets converging on any habitable planet, spreading Unity to it. The dawn of the fourth Millennia a breakthrough in faster than light technology was made, and the Phase Jump was discovered. But, this would be the end of Unity as a peaceful empire, and for almost five thousand years, the end of Unity.

Borg Beginnings

The Borg. At this time they were still lost, individuals, looking for perfection. The encounter they would make with Unity would forever change both. The Unity, a powerful, telepathic empire, beginning to develop nanotechnology that enhanced the body. The Borg desired this, for it would further their pursuit of perfection. In the end, this would lead to a conflict that would lead into the Era of Sacrilege

The Borg had shown up on the edge of Unity space, and simply stated; |We are the Borg. Or pursuit of Perfection has led us to you. Share with us your Technological and biological wonders, and you shall be rewarded” Unity had dismissed this new species as being too straight forward, and unworthy of Unity. Turning their back on them, the Kol ignored the Borg presence, denying any contact and refusing to allow the vessels deeper into their space.

The Borg War

The Borg became infuriated. They desired what the Kol had, and were willing to kill to get it. The Borg-Kol was started only three days after the Borg entry into Unity space. But it would last over a year, and lead to the destruction of the entire Unity.

Towards the end of the war, the two sides were at a stale-mate. The Borg vessels were capable of great defence, but had not main offense. The Kol could eradicate large sections of Borg, but this began to cause strain on Unity. For the first time in almost four millennia, the Unity was split in its ways. This single disruption was all the Borg needed. In a period of weeks, they swept through the Unity, and reduced the Kol back to a handful of planets, stripping them of all technology. In the first few years, millions more would die, leaving the Kol nearly extinct. And for five millennia, they would remain in an impoverished state. For five thousand years, they would fight to gain back what they had lost, to be the great Unity once more.

Fight For Survival, A Fight for Dominance

The struggle was hard. Without their technology, many lost their control over their Psionic abilities, and they would in turn, lose their minds. Civil wars would ensue, massive direst, and the complete loss of civil order. For four thousand years, the Kol would devolve into their pre-industrial, tribe selves. History it seems, was set to repeat itself.

A man, named Atriv Kla’O, came upon three women one day, locked in a heated mental discussion. When he stumbled upon the group, they had simultaneously flooded him with their thoughts. The overwhelming surge of thoughts had caused Atriv to recoil, howling in pain. Yet the women did not stop. It appeared to be their goal crush this man’s mind. To force him to go ma. But, in these blinding moments of pain, madness had not occurred, but in fact genius. He realised that, by controlling this, he could wield a massive army. He could dominate over all the tribes and install himself as their leaders. So turning his mind against them, he began to force the women under his rule, his mind. Now empowered, he proceeded to build an army. Concurring first his planet, he set them to work as a solid military think tank. All were reigned in under what he called Imperial Unity. This new form of Unity would spread like fire, and in mere years, the Kol home world would become a military power. Imperial Unity spread to all previous Kol worlds, and to new worlds inhabited by what Atriv’s daughter would later deem ‘lesser Races’. The Kol rose up from what had once been a peaceful nation, and through horror of their past, and a thirst for revenge, they would grow. They would become stronger. And, in time ,they would reclaim their past domain.

The Kol, under Imperial Unity would soon expand and become a great Empire again, this time closing their boarders completely. No alien vessel that entered their space would leave. Towards the nine thousand year birthday of their race, the Kol would rediscover the powers of Phase Jump technology, and through a stiff rule, they would make themselves seem perfect. But three small issues remained. One, the Lesser races and their strive to be equal. Two, the Borg, and the price they owed the Kol race. And finally, the small, but growing revolutionary group of Kol know as Silence. They simply wanted private thought, to be individuals.

The Lesser Races

This section of Kol history is believed to be one of the least violent. The Lesser Races at one point began to plot to rise up and over throw their Kol over-seers. The attempt was short lived, lasting three weeks. The Kol simply implanted the thought that the Lesser races were actually happy, and they didn’t need change. Only a single Lesser was killed, and it was because he accidentally shot himself.

The Borg Rematch

The Kol, well set in their hatred of the Borg, set out to return the deaths done to them. Equipping their heaviest warships with their heaviest weapons they set out to hunt down their old adversary. Their travels took them to the edge of the Delta quadrant, where they encountered the first Borg cube. The vessels dropped from Phase Space, and opened fire instantaneously, ripping the cube apart in mere seconds. The Second cube they happened upon however would not be so easily destroyed. It took them almost ten minutes of heavy firing to overwhelm the cube and destroy it. Each cube in turn was harder and harder to destroy, until finally the Kol weapons were useless. Retreating, fearing another assault on their space by an enemy they could not defeat they launched themselves into deep study, trying to discover the source of their immunity.

Upon discovering the newly (or, at least as far as the Kol were concerned) added adaptive technology, they began to study it from one of the fallen cubes. Research soon pointed that these shield were only adaptive to energy weapons, and that a physical hit would pass through unaffected. This lead to the development of the new Rail gun system. Capable of firing thousands of rounds a minute, and rounds being easily replicated, the Kol implemented these new weapons, and re-engaged the Borg.

Deep space conflict lead to the destruction of thousands of Borg planets, wiping each one clean of the Borg ‘infestation.’ Soon, the Unity Fleet had carved deep into Borg space, and felt themselves avenged. Billions of drones had been massacred, but feeling their vengeance enacted, the Kol returned home.

        • Be Noted, there are members of the Silence who believe that the 'just returning home' story was never true, that the Borg had repelled the Fleet, and they had covered the story with a great lie. To this day the Silent wonder what had repelled the fleet, and wish to search in down and attempt its destruction.

The Silence

Sections of Unity were still split after the millennia of defeat the Kol had felt. These sections were still hidden, managing to hide their thoughts from the rest of Unity, pretending to be part of the mass. But this charade would only last so long, as one accidentally shared this thought, which then spread quickly. The thoughts that some had shown desire to leave Unity, to be individuals, this shocked the entire Unity. First there was anger, then hatred, then the Plan. These people who desired to be lonesome would be executed and therefore ever silent. This plan worked for only a few months, when these Kol, who called themselves the Silent, simply up and left. Using nanotechnology, they separated themselves, and taking an entire fleet of small frigates, a few Capital ships and a massive City Ship, they disappeared into space. Occasional whispers of their presence in other places in the galaxy is felt.

First Touch of Humanity

October 9th, 2361, the human transport vessel Destined Cargo, escorted by two private frigates, the vessel was transporting a special medicine, and was diverted from its intended course by a heavy plasma storm. This course change lead to the ship having to drop from warp to cool down its engines and make small repairs. Upon exiting warp, the three ships were intercepted by three frigate sized craft of unknown origin. The lead ship, through telepathy, identified itself as Impure Intentions of the Imperial Unity Fourth Patrol Fleet. It went on to inform the human vessels that they were to lower shields and prepare to be boarded. The frigates, under order to defend the cargo, raised shields and powered weapons, preparing for a fight. They got one, but it was the last they would ever get. In mere seconds, the lead frigate was ripped to shreds by a combination of weapons systems that resembled phasers of pulse and beam variety. Next, turning their weapons on the second frigate, this gave Destined Cargo necessary time to reactivate their warp engines and escape safely. No news ever arrived as to if the second frigate survived or not, but the freighter crew assumes not, and since then, on that day, has lit a candle on the bridge in memory of their sacrifice.

    • Note: The Commander of the Freighter was, and to this day is, the Star Fleet retired Captain Telrin Klans. His three sons, Marcus, Edward and Aeron Klans are all current members of Star Fleet, although the only one present, Aeron, has been sworn into secrecy over the issue.

Technology

Civil

Mostly in the form of civil technologies, the Kol are equal to the Federation. The possess holo-projection technology, replicators and transporters. Other than the essentials though, the Unity requires less in the way of social and civil technologies, for most needs are met through the group mind.

Defensive

Again, similar to the Federation, except with very little emphasis placed on cloaking technology. Only their scouts are equipped with it, and that in itself supersedes some of the greatest cloaking technologies of the Alpha and Beta quadrants. Its exact specifications are unknown to Star Fleet at this time, but it seems to access a level of sub-space and submerge itself in it, being completely invulnerable. However during the phase between cloaked and uncloaked, it seems to be completely lacking of any defences, and no weapons appear to be useful whilst cloaked.

Offensive

The single most formidable aspect of the Unity appears to be its offensive capabilities. So, in this section, it had been broken down into the separate, known facts about Unity weapons.

Quantum Arc Cannon: A pulse weapon similar to that of a Star Fleet pulse phaser, which fires a pulse of concentrated quantum energy at a target.

Quantum Arc Laser: A stream of quantum energy. Possibly the second most destructive weapon in the Kol arsenal. Has been known to literally strip a vessel of its hull.

Psionic Laser: On Kol capital ships, these weapons can be found. The exact make up of these weapons are unknown to Star Fleet, but only ever once observed by any culture (Romulan Star Empire), and this weapon, on a D’Dedridex ship with failing shields, actually split the damaged craft in two. Feared above all else, this weapon alone makes Unity capital ships worth avoiding.

Rail gun batteries: Some of the ships can have up to forty to one hundred rail gun batteries, each battery consisting of three rail guns. These are capable of firing up to four thousand rounds per minute, per rail gun. As a long range light weapon, these can be dangerous if used in bulk. With a built in small shielding unit, they are capable of pushing through the navigational deflectors of ships, and if modulated properly, even through shields. -->The M’Ty Rail gun projectile warhead: Used mainly against Borg threats, this weapon contains a eighty isotones warhead, reducing firing rates to five hundred rounds a minute, but massively increasing damage dealt.

Temporal Torpedoes: Rarely used, and very few equipped to a vessel, it fires off a pulse that dilates time shortly before impact. With a four hundred isotone warhead, this is designed to destroy large scale targets, and is very rarely used, both for safety and for practicality.

Ships

Very Little is known specifically about Kol warships. The few Silent who have made their presence known in Star Fleet, refuse to divulge much information on these craft, as the Silence still use them, and they would not wish to share such vital statigic information without permission.

Oracle Class

A dreadnought style battle cruiser, heavily armed. Slow moving and heavy, the are incapable of atmospheric flight. However, their weapon systems are unrivaled in the fleet, and as such, they are often used as Flag Ships of Fleets (Most noted is Unity’s First Fleet)

Prestige Class

A small frigate, heavily armed for combat roles. Fast, well armed, and mass produced, these ships are the working class war vessel. (Note Unity’s First has One hundred and thirty-three of these vessels currently in service, with an estimated twenty-seven under way for completion and addition to the Fleet)

Lumination Class

A seeker vessel of sorts. Stripped of any weapons, the ship is mainly for research and high detailed scans. Often found alone, searching planets for anything useful. Slow moving and weakly armored, the Kol believe these ships untouchable.

Halkyon Carrier

A massive carrier, carrying up to twelve squadrons of fighters. Armed with what one might compare to being half a Oracle, the Halkyons can be used as Flag ships, or as support craft. (Note: Unity’s First Fleet uses three of these vessels as support craft)

Kla’O Class

A Mainstay war ship, consisting of heavier weapons than the Halkyon, and more support vessel carrying ability than the Oracle. There are a few Fleets use this vessel as their main capital ship.

Pulse Space Jump Engine (PSJE)

Another technology that the Silent have informed Star Fleet command of its existence, but refuse to share it, claiming it would be immoral, and would put many lives at risk. They believe the subspace windows created would endanger countless worlds if they were not properly used and contained.

The Theory

In basic practice, a ship creates a window into a layer of subspace known as Phase Space. The Ship creates the window, and is then pulled into Phase Space. Creating a warp bubble inside, a ship can trasverse great distances in very short periods of time. In a rough estimate, it would take a Oracle class vessel six weeks to travel from one end of the galaxy to the other in Phase space, yet almost ninty years to do it at maximum warp (Warp 9.6438)

Engine Systems

The main part of the PSJE. These create the Phase Window, and are responsible for the subsequent Phase Warp. Large on the back of the ship, they change from blue to red as the transition occurs, leaving a large trail in their wake.
