Kolaaris II

Kolaaris II is an inhabited Class M planet in the Kolaaris system, a star system in Federation space near the Romulan Neutral Zone. The planet is surrounded by a ring system that emits high levels of ionic radiation. As a result, the planet's atmosphere has become so concentrated with the radiation that all forms of sensor, transport, and communication signals become distorted or scattered as they pass through it.

Over the past two centuries, the Kolaarins have developed a method of transmitting communications through the atmosphere with minimal degradation using concentrated pulses of simulated solar radiation to temporarily de-ionize a small portion of the atmosphere before sending signals to an orbital satellite system.

In 2383, the USS Pioneer visited the planet during a diplomatic mission to consider their application for Federation membership. Their application was later denied following the kidnapping of several members of the Pioneer crew by members of the planetary government.

In 2384, a Federation Medical Vessel was sent to Kolaaris II in order to assist them in the development of a cure for the "Aak-Tarr," a major plague that was decimating the planet's population.
