The Marine Commanding Officer (Marine CO or MCO) is responsible for all the Marine personnel assigned to the ship/facility. S/he is in required to take command of any special ground operations and liaise such actions with security.

The MCO can range from a Second Lieutenant on a small ship to a Major General on a large facility or colony. As the commander of the detachment the MCO is usually a commissioned officer although some squad or section strength detachments might be commanded by a non-commissioned officer. Regardless of rank the MCO is charged with the training, condition and tactical leadership of the Marine compliment and are a member of the senior staff, reporting directly to the Commanding Officer of the ship/facility.
