Marine Expeditionary Forces (MEF) are the combined Marine forces assigned to a Starfleet Task Force. They include the ground forces and aerospace elements as well as command, headquarter & supply and logistics units. MEFs are generally commanded by a Brigadier General.
There are currently four MEFs operating within the Ninth Marine Division:
- 1st Marine Expeditionary Force assigned to Independent Fleet Operations
- 21st Marine Expeditionary Force assigned to Task Force 21
- 47th Marine Expeditionary Force assigned to Task Force 47
- 72nd Marine Expeditionary Force assigned to Task Force 72
It is important for military history buffs not to confuse the current usage of MEF with the archaic use. Modern day MEF includes formations which in the 21st century were referred to as Marine Expeditionary Units and Marine Expeditionary Brigades as well as Marine Expeditionary Forces.
