Quatal Prime

A Class M world in the Quatal System of the Dorvan Sector, Quatal Prime rests well inside the Demilitarized Zone that divides the Federation from Cardassian space. It has a "sister" planet called Quatal Terminus that is Class N and uninhabitable. Prime has well over one hundred-fifty surveyed mountain ranges on the surface, and is believed to have at least that many more underneath its three large oceans. Until 2373, it was a thriving Cardassian colony with substantial mining operations around the blue-hued planet. That year, Maquis leader Michael Eddington chose it along with Veloz Prime as targets for his biogenic weapon, which he released into its atmosphere. The resin was toxic to Cardassians, who were forced to abandon the colony under the protection of the USS Defiant. The Maquis returned later and claimed the planet, although there was no attempts at occupy it. (DS9: "For the Uniform")
The Jem'Hadar used the planet as a barracks and supply depot during the Dominion War. After switching sides to the Federation Alliance late in the war, the Cardassians exacted harsh retribution against the troops that remained there for the Dominion's attempted genocide. Since then, Quatal Prime has been deserted save for the occassional wandering criminal or illegal miner. Talks are in the process for other non-Cardassian species (aligned with the Cardassian Union) to resettle and resume mining operations.
