Structure Explained

The Starfleet Marine Corps structure can changed based on two things. One, if it is a Marine base, the highest person in the chain of command will be the General. However, for a Starfleet Detachment on a ship, the Marine CO answers to the ship's CO.

The Marines are organised by the Fleet, with their highest authority under the Fleet Council being The Commandant of the Marine Corps. The SFMC is organized into two principal subdivisions:

The Headquarters Support and Service Battalion, where the majority of the decisions are taken, is stationed at Obsidian Colony under the command of Major General Darnell Rawls while day-to-day operations are overseen by the S1,. It is a clear administrative based organisation, organising personnel transfer, supplies, missions and general Marine orientated orders.

Then there is the the Operating Forces. The Operating Forces are further subdivided into two categories: Marine forces assigned to Marine bases and Marine detachments on Starships. The division of these two forces is necessary due to the change of the command structure depending on which Operating Force the Marine belongs to.

With a Marine Base, the highest ranking officer is the Marine Base CO. He reports to the Generals at Marine Corps HQ. Under him is the Marine XO, who like a ship's XO is a bridge between the Marine officers and their CO. Each platoon has a Platoon Commander who is responsible for the 32 men and women under him. He is the equivalent to a Department Head and reports to the XO and CO. The Platoon Commander has one other officer under him, who acts like his assistant, usually dealing with the Platoon Sergeant.

With the NCOs, the highest ranking will always be the First Sergeant. The First Sergeant, who can be a staff sergeant, gunnery sergeant or a master sergeant, and bridges the gap between the enlisted and the officers. He reports to the CO or XO and is responsible for making sure all the enlisted Sergeants are doing their jobs.

Battalion

A battalion has between two and seven companies and consists of 300–1,200 Marines.

Company

A company have five platoons and has 160 Marines. It has a Marine Company Commander and a Marine Company Sergeant.

Platoons

A platoon consists of 4 squadrons, totalling them to 32 Marines. In each Platoon, the Platoon Sergeant is responsible for all the enlisted in his or hers platoon. They report and work closely with the officers in their platoon, making sure that orders are carried out to the letter and generally taking care of their Marines. They also report to the First Sergeant, usually with things that a Platoon Commander can't sort out.

Squadron

Each Platoon has four squadrons and each squadron has a squadron leader. The squad leader is usually a sergeant, although at times corporals with exceptional records can be squad leaders. The squad leader reports to the Platoon sergeant and First Sergeant.

As a Detachment

On a ship, the command structure is different. Each ship has a different number of Marines. Some Detachments consists of one platoon of 32 Marines, while others can have three platoons. On a starship, the senior officer is always the Ship CO, and the Marine CO reports to him or her, the same way a Department Head would. There is a Marine XO, a First Sergeant, then a Platoon Sergeant and four squad leaders per platoon.
