Strategic Operations always has a role to play during any mission but there are certain cases in which their involvement is pivotal. Below is a list of certain activities that require Strategic Operations and what their role to play will be.

Escort Duty

If a ship is assigned escort duty then it is their mission to protect the vessels they have been assigned to. This requires a great deal of ship to ship communication and organisation. This responsibility would fall to the Strategic Operations department. It would be their duty to submit a suggested course for the ships to follow, ensure all ships stay together as well as keep an eye on local traffic to make sure no threats are evident. If a battle were to take place then all ships would need to know where to be and what to do. Strategic Operations would make sure these plans are already in place and would even conduct training exercises.

Fleet Battles

In the event of a fleet battle taking place a CO would look heavily to their Strategic Operations department for many of the decisions which would need to take place. Strategic Operations would need to suggest battle plans to the CO, taking into account all kinds of variables. Once a battle plan is devised then they must make sure all friendly ships are aware of this plan and know it implicitly. During the battle the department would have to keep an eye on everything happening from friendly ship activities to enemy movements. If an unforeseen event takes place then it may be that Strategic Operations need to suggest an alteration to the battle plan.
