Because technology has made the use of invasive medicine less likely, the position of Chief Medical Officer is usually held by a General Practitioner. While simple surgery is part of their training, some doctors on larger vessels and starbases prefer to have a Surgeon on staff. Surgeons can be generalized in their skills or specialized, such as a transplant surgeon or orthopaedic surgeon. Most surgeons aboard ship fall under either general or trauma practices. Further specialization is typically reserved for planetary facilities, starbases, and dedicated medical vessels.
