The Treaty of Armens was a treaty between the United Federation of Planets and the Sheliak Corporate, which came about as a result of the Armens Border Conflicts and the Armens Conference, inaugurated in 2255 on one of the most highly contested worlds. The treaty was highly complex and took over 300 Legal and Diplomatic Experts three years to draft to the satisfaction of the Sheliak, a problem compounded by a non-existent understanding of the Sheliak tongue.

The treaty created a specific set of provisions and two zones, the "Zone of Sheliak Colonization Interest" and the "Zone of Federation Colonization Interest" primarily oriented around Class H and Class M worlds. The treaty also laid out methodology for resolving any future conflicts, including arbitration and a further conference.

The reclusive Sheliak feel that humans are inferior lifeforms, and want little to no contact with them. The Federation accidentally violated this treaty in 2276 by establishing a colony on Tau Cygna V, a desert planet ceded to the Sheliak under the terms of the treaty. The Sheliak demanded the removal of the colony in 2366, citing the terms of the treaty.

The map on the right of the page, shows the current state of play within the Treaty of Armens' designated areas of colonization interest, the Federation's still largely un-colonized and the Sheliak's largely utilized.
