Second Lieutenant, usually abbreviated to 2LT, is the lowest Marine officer rank and the rank at which almost all Marine officers are commissioned.
Second Lieutenants are fresh from training and, as such, have no field experience despite the fact that they are considered qualified to command a platoon. They are, therefore, often assigned to serve as adjutants to higher ranking officers or in staff positions to gain experience under a senior officer. Occasionally a Second Lieutenant will be assigned as as commanding officer of small shipborne detachments.
