The Company Sergeant is responsible for all the enlisted Marine personnel assigned to their Company Commander's company. The Company Sergeant is usually the senior enlisted Marine in the company.

Usually a Company Sergeant holds the rank of Gunnery Sergeant although it can be held by a Staff Sergeant or even Master Sergeant should it be required.

The Company Sergeant works closely with the Company Commander, supervising the training of the Marines in their company. Generally the Company Sergeant has years of experience and are often very respected by their soldiers and superiors. The Company Sergeant can also fill in for any Company officer should they be killed or wounded, provided that there are no higher ranking NCOs available to do so.

Besides the officers they serve under, a Company Sergeant can also be required to report to their First Sergeant or regimental Sergeant Major.
