Anthony had finally had time to stat cooling his heals from the testing phase of the return to duty cruise. He had been wondering how Hunter and his friends had been going, not that there was much to do for doctors and nurses during recertification cruises, except play Doctors and Nurses he Thought to give Hunter a call and see if he had anything going today. =/\=Chief Petty Officer Payton, This is Lieutenant Edwards. I was wondering if you are free to catch up in the lounge or somewhere?=/\=
Hunter had booked a day off to just rest. It had been a rough time getting the bay sorted and getting all things working. He had worked a few 14 hour shifts and today was one of those lazy day that he was home reading. When the familiar voice came through he closed the leather bound book he'd been reading and smiled. "Absolutely," he said tapping the coms. =/\=Lounge sounds good I didn't have any lunch yet. Meet you there in 30 minutes?=/\=
=/\=See you there Chief.=/\= Anthony said over the comm an spent fifteen minutes securing the experiment he had be working on before he signed off made his way his quarters and change his top at least. He then headed over to the lounge.
Hunter had beaten Anthony by a whole 5 minutes. He'd just settled at a table when he saw Anthony enter. He waived him over. Hunter was the kind of person that liked to be early for everything. He'd showered, changed, and had time to check on Galatea...not that he'd done it in an obvious way. She'd been stressed lately and he now knew why. He sighed and tired to put it out of his mind. He was determined that this posting would be different and that here would be a new start for him.
“Ah there you are!” Anthony said as he went to the Bar and got a drink before he headed over. “Prompt I like that leads to efficiency.” Anthony said and smiled before he finished with “So how’s work, Busy getting the Medical Bay locked down?”
Hunter smiled, "Yeah something like that. The bay was a mess when I got back from vacation and the doc didn't take it well. We've all been working overtime to get things running. Thankfully we're ready to go. How're things in your department?
“Interesting. Just as we were about to leave I got a very talented cilivian maybe even a propulsion specialist. She trained as an Ensign by withdrew for Civilian science over following the fleet direction.” Anthony said. “So speaking of the Doctor, how is she reacting to being back out in space?”
Hunter considered the question and took a sip of his drink to give him sometime to formulate the appropriate answer. "She's okay just very stressed as of late."
“Oh anything I could help with? I mean I might not have the medical degree but I understand the scientific process I could allievate some of the stress.”
Hunter shook his head. "Naww. She's got to figure this out on her own." Hunter looked somewhat worried but managed to remove the look quickly. "So, tell me a bit about you? What brought you to Wolff?"
"The likelihood of first contact. I am a language specialist every other planner close enough and habitable has been explored and the languages fully catalogued and a long time in the universal translator. charting some new star would be nice but the Languages would be more the draw in reality." Anthony said. "Did you Specialise in nursing or take the generalise course Hunter?"
"I've always had an affinity for languages myself." He said sipping his drink. "I did a specialist in nursing. I completed my courses enough to be a doctor but never took the final. Nursing always seemed to fit well." He shrugged. "Somehow it seemed to be a calling I guess."
“Yes many of the nurses I have known in my life have said exactly the same thing that it is a vocation that called them. Doctors are okay but they sometimes miss the bedside manor, which is why we need nurses.” Anthony smiled. “Should be interesting getting to know you how many languages do you know and what are they?”
"I speak Bajoran, Betazoid, Standard Federation, Romulan, Vulcan and my friend Soral is teaching me Trill." He sipped his drink, "How about you?"
"I have mastered six Terran languages obviously Federation Standard is in there. During my Doctorate and my Cadetship I learnt Reman, Klingon, Insectoid Zindi, Romulan, Vulcan and Denobulan. Reman almost sent me nuts. Did you say a friend is teaching you Trill, Would you mind if you have someone dropping in on your lessons?"
"Sure that would work. It's a fascinating language." Hunter sipped his drink. "So what hobbies do you have?"
"Anything not science related. As you probably know from being a nurse, which is also a fully trained doctor, Science is a bit of a drag on time. So part from sleeping, which doesn't help because I find myself still thinking of what is happening down in science, same when I am in the mess. modelling ships of the space exploration times allow my to do something with my fingers that also takes concentration to which pulls my mind from science." Anthony said.
Hunter smiled. Just as he was about to speak the food they ordered came. They chatted a bit more and then dug into the delicious meal. Hunter sighed, "Are you as nervous about this cruise as the doc?"
“Always a little nervous. I think I am more nervous this time than my last ship, because now I am leading the science team. We have already deployed some of my new toys and they worked exactly as fleet said they would. Having a civilian in science is interesting. I have never come across them before. I know they are out there but I expect as soon as we all get working together and we find our niches then we should all settle down.” Anthony said as it registered that Hunter said that Galatea was nervous then he said “Hang on did you say Galatea is nervous, what’s she got to be nervous about? She beautiful!”
He laughed, "She's not convinced this will all be a walk in the park." Hunter got a far away look for a moment, as if pondering a problem. "She's been stressed lately. She's gotten some not so happy news. I wish I could help her but she tends to pull into herself."
“Well being her underling, I am sorry to use the word because I am sure it isn’t that you are very talented yourself. Though maybe she could do with a friendly face. I mean it can’t be easy being both Chief Vampire and Chief Counsellor?” Anthony said.
Hunter laughed, "Chief Vampire. I like that." Smiling he took a sip of his drink, "She needs to work things out for now. The doc has a lot of growing to do."
“Any bad blood between Galatea and any of the old crew that would make adjusting more difficult?” Anthony asked. “I would hope not as that would certainly make it harder for her.”
Hunter studied the man and then smiled, "No bad blood that I know of. Like I said she just needs to work things out. So how are you adjusting to the ship?"
“Good thanks, I think... The knowledge that he had just been mentally surveyed almost made him laugh as he wondered at the outcome of the survey. He was certain it would come to light if he had failed. “If I can get my head around having a civilian in my laboratories then I should be okay.” After a few minutes he wondered what hunter did for fun apart from learning languages. “So how do you spend your spare time?”
He thought about it a moment, "I read a lot. I play guitar, I write and I'm a photographer and I love to cook." He thought about it. "Sounds like too much doesn't it? I just love to keep busy."
"Yeah me too really." Anthony said and smiled quietly to himself. "Busy is better than bored!"
Hunter laughed, "I am rarely board." He thought a moment. "So did you do anything exciting while the ship was docked?"
“I spent most of it on a scientific observation post being a linguistic specialist on Aurillac 3 which is an amazing mix of Reman Romulan and Bollian, which is to say early Fed Standard too. What about you, how did you spend your time. Probably seconded to the base medical team?” Anthony asked.
"Actually I took all my leave time worked on my music and my book. It was good to have a rest. Also helped a friend out with some medical tests." Hunter was about to go on when the coms chimed and the doctor's melodic voice came though calling him back to the medical bay for an emergency assist.
Hunter sighed, "Well I guess in medicine a day off is not a day off." He smiled. "This was good. We should make lunch a regular thing."
“I think that is just science cause I don’t get much time to just be either. Though I love the idea of garunteeing some time off to enjoy myself might be good. So did we want to start this as a weekly think or maybe monthly seeing how busy we both will be.” Anthony asked.
Hunter's lip twitched, "You just reminded me of the doc. She loves her schedules." He thought for a minute. "How about we make it a bi weekly things and adjust as appropriate to time?"
"I would guess it is more likely to be a positional thing, I expect most Chiefs would love schedules it keeps life compartmentalised and organised. Though I think bi weekly, or fortnightly sorry ever the linguist, is a good idea, I'll contact you when I have some spare time." Anthony said with a smile.
Hunter gave a nod and the two parted ways. As he walked towards sickbay Hunter couldn't help but feel exhausted.
